So, I looked on Twitter and apparently 42 One Direction fans killed themselves after a documentary aired that Channel 4 in the UK that hated on 1D fans or something. It was a sub group called Larry Shippers who fantasize about a romance between two of the members. The documentary portrayed fans as crazy and mentally ill.

this is pretty cray cray.

Sounds like a hoax, and another reason not to trust everything you see on social media sites.

Well, they didn't do much to prove them wrong.

Totally agree! And on that note I was informed via Twitter that I would not understand. I really wanted to reply with "No shit Sherlock!"

Justin Bieber and One fucking Direction are responsible for a whole generation of kids who are mentally unstable and living in a fantasy world. Its ironic the kids are claiming this documentary is not what they are like because this is EXACTLY what they are like.

as Bob said, Batshit mental... that documentary was as good an advert to not have kids as ive ever seen!

Well the title of the documentary was "Crazy about One Direction" and it didn't disappoint. That is one of the reasons why I watched it to see just how obsessive they were about this group.

Actually every fandom has some form of shippers (relationship orientated fans) where they either fantasize about themselves romantically involved with their target of obsession or in this case between two of members of the group. You often see shippers in TV shows where there is male/female characters and the fans want to see them together romantically (it (the term) originated from fans of the X-Files who wrote fan fiction about Mulder and Scully).

After the show aired I started following the twitter trends and the fans went ballistic. The trend #RIPLarryShippers started with 4 teens committing suicide, then the number went up to 14, 28 and then 52, oddly it stands at 42 now. There have been no confirmed suicides according to some popular UK sites that have been following this trend. Since the band became famous there has been on and off twitter trends on these "shippers" killing themselves, last year around this time there was a trend that 3 had killed themselves (none confirmed). One of the interesting (or disturbing) things about the documentary was the lengths that the fans would go to on twitter to get any kind of reply from the band members, tweeting everything from a pet died, best friend died, to close family member and even a terminal disease, all to get a response. Me thinks that this is another hoax to get the band members to speak about the documentary.

I disagree, I think it's a combo of them being able to congregate online and add to each others obsessions, and us being able to see it all playing out. Teenagers have always obsessed over things. Beatle mania?

It's always been this way. This is no different than it was in the 40s, 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s and 00s. Teenagers have always grown inappropriately, hysterically attached to their idols. There were literal riots to see Frank Sinatra, Elvis, and the Beatles. Back in the 70s, 600 fans were injured and a girl was killed when fans stampeded at a David Cassidy concert. People committed suicide when Kurt Cobain killed himself. The only difference now is the internet.

While that is true most events of the early 70' (including this one) were festival seating, the same thing happened at a Who concert in Cincinnati (17 were trampled to death). It was a rush to get the best seat much like people getting killed at Wallyworld on black Friday.

Like you said social media is the driving force behind a new breed of obsessed fans.

Honestly, the only thing that bugs me about Bieber and One Direction is where were all the girls who like effeminate girly-boys when I was in high school? :(

and Bay City Rollers.

Its worse now with social media, but it was always need around.

Outside looking in I've always been confused by this. May it be Sinatra, Beatles, Elvis, Cobain, or now with Bieber or One Direction. I've never cared about any entertainer, much less anything else THAT much to confuse love and obsession.

I remember just looking on the top trends on twitter dealing with that documentary and the fans saying "That documentary isn't us. You should show the fans who are on their computers 24 hours a day constantly voting constantly watching the videos constantly crying." because he with the most votes and most views wins. Because that in itself isn't crazy and is some sort of accomplishment.
