How to get a custom graphic to advertise?

Hello everyone,
My long distance girlfriend recently started working on mfc to help get funds to come live with me (other side of the world eek!). I think she is doing great and we're doing everything in the open towards each other, but I would like to surprise her with some profile images with text so we're able to add members to her club (that we will set up asap) and the like.
Now I personally (nor her) know anything about creating something nice like that, so I would have to hire a designer I think.
How did you guys go about doing this? Are there trusted studios you would recommend or dangers?

Are you looking to just add text to a photo, or do something a little more advanced like creating animated gifs of existing images you have and/or banner images she can use in her profile and room? My wife and I use a program called GIMP for a lot of our promo material that we make and I am looking into banner makers right this moment myself. Gimp can be a little overwhelming at first but is totally worth learning to use if you are going to do any kind of photo editing. Check it out and let me know what you think and if this was any help!
