The general guideline for task lighting is that you need about one to three watts per one square foot of space to provide adequate lighting. Does anyone have a guideline for how those numbers would change when trying to design a three point lighting system for a webcam? Those numbers in the article I linked may be for halogen lighting, so you would need to make adjustments for compact fluorescent lighting (CFL) or LED.

Assume one key light, one fill light, and one hair light for an area about the size of a bed, around 10 foot by 10 foot. Just for the sake of example, assume the model will move around during her show within that 100 square foot area frequently during the show, and she wants to stay well-lit no matter how she repositions. Assume also that the model wants to go with LED light panels, to minimize energy consumption and heat output.

How many watts should the LED Key - and LED Fill - lights be for this application?

– In dining rooms and corridors you will need around 10 – 20 lumens per square metre.
– Kitchens and rooms where you read casually will require more lighting, around 20 – 55 lumens per square metre.
– Rooms more intensive reading or study need to be better lit, with a lumens requirement of around 55 – 110 per square metre

You can do a search on the conversion of lumens to watts for your type of lighting. Lumens measure the amount of light, rather than power output.

(sorry for the metrics)
