Necromancing this thread because the phenomena just continues to grow according to recent news and some late night talk shows.

Personally, I'm totally clueless... there seems to be no shortage of guys at Hello Kitty conventions either which strikes me as way too creepy.

I just thought of it as an adorable little icon initially, but seems to have grown into sex toys and gained sort of a cult following all it's own.

Can somebody please explain what all the hoopla about HK is?

:dontknow:

Hello Kitty started out in Japan in the 70s, and was put on a lot of stuff. Some people think it's from a cartoon, and while there might be modern renditions of this, it was originally just a design. The classic version is red, but now there are lots of themes, and colours, pink being pretty popular now.

If anything, Hello Kitty is kind of like the Japanese version of Mickey Mouse, it's everywhere, and considering that Japan has two HK themed amusement parks, well there you go. As to why it's popular in the USA, it's been here since the 70's as well. I guess some of us just like cats better than mice.

I can't speak for the conventions or the sex toys (if they exist I am willing to bet that they are marketed as "personal massagers" and not dildos), but seeing as the design is on a TON of different stuff, there's a reason for it's prevalent popularity otherwise.
