Maybe kind of an odd question, but I figure there are more ladies concentrated here than anywhere else I might ask this...

Does anyone have a recommendation for a good detangling, wash-out conditioner? I keep my hair pretty long, normally pulled back into a pony tail (I got 12 inches, bb :-D ), so of course it gets tangled up and becomes a pain to brush without a serious struggle. Over the years I've occasionally found brands of conditioner that work pretty well at detangling without requiring me to leave it in after I get out of the shower. But, of course, brands and specific products come and go, which is what's happened to me recently. So rather than just randomly try various things, I figured I'd ask.

My hair becomes a knotty mess if I don't use conditioner so I am actually excited to see what some of the other ladies recommend as well.

If you are willing to spend decent money on your shampoo/conditioner anything chi is pretty much amazing, redken and pureology are also great products. They tend to be sold more in salons but seeing as I only wash my hair 2-3 times a week, pending my activities, I dont mind splurging when I make it to the salon every 4 months or so. I believe you can find chi products at walmart now but if you google them you can find them sold on lots of websites including amazon.

http://www.pureology.com/
http://www.redken.com/products/mens - I have never used the mens line but can only imagine that it works as well as the womens.

If splurging is not your thing in between trips to the salon I tend to switch back and forth between Pantene, Garnier Fructis, and Herbal Essence. I currently have Nexxus products and it was my first time trying it and I am not a huge fan.

PS. Be ready for lots of opinions, if this thread turns out anything like our models only one you will soon be overwhelmed by products, links and opinions.

Conditioners can only do so much, that's what I find.

I used to have really long hair before I recently cut it off (probably cut off about 12 inches, haha) and I found many ways to make your hair less tangled.

Invest in a scissor made for cutting hair, it might be expensive but other scissors won't be sharp enough and will just damage your hair. Use it when you have some time, and cut off any split ends you can find about half an inch above the damage. Also be aware that some splits are not in the ends - if one small section of a strand is a lot lighter or shinier than the other you cut it off, and if the hair bends in an unnatural straight angle you cut it off.

Brush your hair with a brush made from natural fibres, it is a lot less damaging to your hair - and damaged hair is tangled hair.

Use a lot of conditioner and leave it in for a while longer than the bottle says. To avoid greasy looking hair, use the conditioner mostly on the parts below your ears. You can even wrap a warm towel around it to turn it into an intense treatment. If your shampoo runs out before your conditioner - you're doing it wrong.

Never brush your hair when it's wet.

Always use heat protection of you use heated styling products.

Use a satin pillowcase and collect your hair in a bun at the top of your head when you're sleeping.

Don't use hair bands with a metal connector.

Apply an oil to your hair after you shower (like Orofluido or Schwarzkopf BC oil miracle), it will leave your hair smooth, light and less tangled.

There you go, I hope you find some of it helpful :)

I haven't had a tail in lots-o-years but the gal I go riding with has hair almost to her ass. She now swears by some stuff called "Wen" hair care products. She does try to braid it much of the time but even after riding, the braid falls out easily and doesn't seem to have any knots that she can't finger comb out. I have to admit, despite the abuse her hair gets going down the road @ 70mph, its never looked better. :twocents-02cents:

I saw this stuff on TV and have been wanting to try it!! I have also found that keeping a braid in my hair, its not nearly as long as your friends, anytime I ride in a jeep with the top/doors off seems to make my hair much less trouble than any other type of pony tail/style.

I too have long hair and my biggest problem is frizz. Like, I'll step out of the shower and an hour later it'll be frizzy as all fuck. It takes until the next morning (and sleeping on it) for it to calm down. They used to do this miracle stuff called SunSilk anti-frizz serum. It was fucking awesome. But they stopped making it :(
Is there anything that does the same thing that's still available?

Hair oils are good for this too. It's the latest thing in hair care, so you'll find lots of products in different price ranges. I love Orofluido, but it might have a bit too feminine scent for you :p

Frizz Ease!!! You can usually find this at any wal-mart, target, drug store etc!

See, my hair likes to stay however it dried. If I wait until it's dry to brush it, I'll be fighting the tangles all day long!

I use cheap-ass conditioner, massage it in pretty damn well, then only half-way rinse it out (translation- hold my head under the shower but don't touch my hair, it's done rinsing when there's no more sliminess to the water as it runs down my body). seems to work all right...

was using some stuff I picked up by accident (I reached for the shampoo and somehow grabbed the conditioner), garnier fructis it was, and it worked really well (even without leaving it halfway in).

My solution to frizz- the above conditioner method, brush it right out of the shower, and let it air-dry (only towel dry it enough so it's not dripping excessively, and wear nothing but a long t-shirt until it's not gonna soak my clothes.)

I hope I gave you gentlemen enough visuals :p

Agreed! Frizz Ease is the best non-super-expensive serum there is I think.. You can use the original serum or they have other products, like a finishing creme, that work well too.

I seem to have become distracted by something or other.

My hair isn't particularly wavy or frizzy, but this seems to be what happens to me. My normal routine is to leave my conditioner in for 3 minutes or so and wash it out right before I get out of the shower. I dry it by pressing it in a towel, then brush it out straight, press it once more with a separate towel, and let it air dry after that. I really want it pretty low-maintenance.

While I'm not a total cheapskate, I have managed to find reasonably priced (read non-salon brand) conditioners that worked well in the past. For a while, I'd been using Infusium 23 Moisturologie, which they stopped making / changed the formula for, and while I haven't tried the new version, I've read it doesn't work as well.

The Wen stuff looks interesting, but I'm always skeptical of N-in-1 products, and it's kind of pricey.

I have super long hair almost down to my butt and if i didnt care for it right it would be a mess and a laf. I get asked all the itme in my room how the hell i keep it so nice looking, and how much of a pain it is to care for. Its really not.
I use Tresemme shampoo and conditioner, the Anti Breakage ones. They work fantastic for me. I just shampoo and wash my face then rinse it out. Then i condition and shave my legs then rinse that out and in done. My hair has never looked better in its life. It keeps my hair super strong and silky and shiny. And i blow dry it every day and dont put any other products in it. Tresemme is available in any drug store and Walmart, its not super expensive, and the kicker for me was its not tested on animals as i wont buy anything that is.
I tried pureology and it left my hair with this weighed down feeling every time. Herbal essences i used years ago and loved it but they changed their formula as i bought some on sale a few months ago and it was just horrid. I threw it away after 2 days. I refuse to switch to anything else again lol.
When my hair was shorter i will say the Frizz Ease stuff was absolutely amazing and worked every day no problems. Definitely worth the money and its not expensive. It totally saved me from some bad hair days when it was humid.

Hurm. As far as actual technique, you can't just plop shampoo or conditioner on and then rinse it off. That stuff actually has to sit on there for a while to do anything important.

I use Head 'n Shoulders, because (gross alert) when I drink caffeine I get sores on my scalp, and that's the only thing that will get rid of it. Head 'n Shoulders is supposed to work with your scalp and make it all healthy 'n stuff. I usually put that in first and leave it on my head for 5-15 minutes, depending on how much contemplation of the universe needs to be done. Then I rinse it out and leave my conditioner in until I get out of the shower.

Also, washing your hair every day really isn't good for it. A lot of the products build up in there and clog up your follicles, making it harder for your hair to grow. I only wash my hair a few times a week.

If you want to get all fanceh, consider having normal shampoo/conditioner and then getting a nice quality deep-cleansing and deep-conditioning shampoo/conditioner to use once a month or once every couple of weeks. If the products you use are nice, they should clear out all the chemical buildup that will be in your hair and on your skin.

Back when I used to get dandruff (dunno why it quit I'm still a hairball lol) I noticed that products like Head 'n' Shoulders would seem to lose their effectiveness after a few weeks, so I started alternating it with Selsun Blue and regular shampoo, and it seemed to work better.

I use Aveda Scalp Benefits Shampoo. I love the way it smells, and it keeps my scalp from getting too dry.

I've started using Organic stuff... Or stuff without Sulfates. Pureology is AMAZING. But I use Alba Organics, the Plumeria, && Organix Vanilla, or Coconut. :).

My hair is really long and very very very damaged. My hair is naturally thick, course, curly, frizzy and puffy. I have to use an insane amount of heat to style it. Add that damage to the bleaching and dyeing.

I use Head & Shoulders shampoo because I used it back when I had dandruff and I still like it! I use the smoothing kind and it has reduced my curls to more manageable waves. I have found it to be pretty moisturizing and it makes my hair feel healthier.

As for conditioner, I currently use a moisturizing mask for thick course hair called Straight sexy hair.. I leave it on for a long time. Sometimes I will put on a shower cap and blast it with the blow dryer. The heat is supposed to help the conditioner soak in better.

I went to the salon and got my hair cut, and she told me I should try a Keratin treatment. It's kind of expensive, but I am going to go for it the moment I have enough money because I think it'd cut down on the stress I put on my hair to style it. It's not like I spend a lot of money on my hair anyway :)

Also, I'd like to recommend to anyone who color treats their hair this after color treatment I use. Ion color Brilliance after color treatment. I swear my hair goes from feeling like tangled straw to normal moisturized hair in only 5 minutes (although I usually leave it in just a bit longer). I buy it at Sally's.

Moroccanoil hair care products, while spendy, have been amazing to my hair. I have dramatically changed hair colors (highlights, brown, bright red, back to brown) and these products have helped maintained my blown out cuticles. I also use Josie Maran argan oil hair serum on occasion but prefer the Moroccanoil.

I admit my answer is more suited for females, I don't see why it can not be applied to men. I use CHOOCY! It is a non-lathering shaving cream for your entire body. It is also a hair conditioner. I realize that may sound odd. But, I promise I'm not just using shaving cream for conditioner, it clearly states it is also a hair conditioner. AND works amazingly.
You can normally find it in your local toy store, and of course on Amazon. Been using it for 5 years.
