Beard envy? Surgery may be the answer
http://www.cnn.com/2014/03/13/health/beard-transplants/

STORY HIGHLIGHTS
The inability to grow a thick beard has some men turning to surgery
A transplant can run up to $10,000 for a full beard
One man says it's the best money he's ever spent

Take a look at Hollywood's leading men, the White House press secretary and the hipsters strolling through Brooklyn. It's obvious beards are in, and the inability to grow thick warm fuzz can leave some men feeling left out in the cold. At least, that's how it would seem from the reported uptick in facial hair transplants. "Whether they're filling in a few gaps or doing a complete beard construction, New York City doctors who specialize in the procedure said they're seeing a growing number of men paying as much as $7,000 to pump up their beards," wrote Serena Solomon, who first reported on the trend on the neighborhood news site DNAinfo New York.

There's more in the article, but it's just confirmation for what I've believed for a long time: Men are more vain than women!

I've been shaving since I was 15 and I hate it! If I could find some way to sell off my fast growing facial hair to some of these folks I would be more then happy to do so. Must be a "grass is greener" type of thing.
:dontknow:

Beards are definitely the newest fashion trend for guys. In the last 6 months it seems every single dude I know has tried to grow a beard. And I'm not just talking a nicely trimmed beard, I mean full blown, wiry growth! And those who haven't grown one seem to be in a state of despair because their beard just doesn't want to grow properly!

I'm not complaining in the slightest, but I wonder what brought it on. Most of the guys I know who've grown one seem to be doing so simply because they want to prove they can. Like a personal achievement to show themselves that they truly are an adult man.

I've also noticed that one person will grow a beard and all the other guys will take the piss, but then start growing their own beard in envy. My boyfriend grew one a while back, mainly because I'm not usually keen on clean shaven and he has to either have a beard or a clean shave for work, after that I noticed loads of his friends started growing one, and since he's shaved his off guys keep acting really disappointed as they show him their new beards. It's like beards united! One person gets one and then more beards start popping up everywhere. I'm not joking, now every single guy I know in my area has grown one or is trying to grow one.

Would any of you guys get beard implants? I guess they're like hair implants, which as far as I know don't look great...

Beards are great. I had one off and on since I could grow one. Then, it started being the only grey hair I had, and it really made me look a lot older than I do without it. Once I'm all grey I'll probably grow it back.

The only good thing to come out of having cancer is that my facial hair is easier to shave, and grows slower. It used to be painful dragging a razor through my beard, now I can do it super easy.

I've used an electric for most of my shaving life. I tried a regular razor when I first started shaving and it tore my face to shreds so that didn't last long.

I tried several high end electric shavers, and none of them could handle my beard. I always had to go back to the razor.

Can I just say that sometimes I feel like I'm the odd one out because I don't find beards on men attractive.

To be clear, this is a beard (with bonus naked lady!):

That's unattractive to me. The guy automatically reminds me of an old man, even though he'd probably be handsome without the beard.
I don't know. I don't get the fascination with beards or moustaches these days. :help:

This is not a beard (at least not a BEARD-beard...):

This on the other hand is attractive to me. It's barely even a beard, just looks kind of scruffy and like for a few days he had better things to do than shaving, I guess. :D

And most guys look a million times better with a three-day beard than smooth-shaven.
A good example is Zach Braff. He's not a handsome man, but the beard in Season 8 of Scrubs does so much for him IMO.

I like a good three-day beard. Rawr. But guys with long bushy beards need to stay away from me. :/

An article was published saying that most women prefer men who have a beard.

I don't like a huge bushy beard, but some facial hair is nice. But I'm also good with no facial hair. And to be completely honest, I kinda prefer to not see the man I'm interested in until after I know his personality, because I'd rather base my judgments on personality than looks.

Yeah, this.

It's an interesting fashion phenomenon. I shaved my beard off at the end of last year and I immediately had a ton of negative feedback. Most ladies I know hated that I shaved it off; where as a ton of guys told me to stay clean shaven because I looked quite a bit younger. In the end, I grew it back because I like it (not to mention to please the lady in my life :p )

Never got into beards. Not even sure how long it would take to grow a decent one. Love long sideburns tho.

Shaun, not sure if you have the same problem as I do but this is what works for me. First I only use the Norelco three cutter, floating head style. I tried the foil style once and it sucked for my needs. I buy the basic corded ones ($30-40) since I usually have to replace it once a year or two as the blades eventually do get dull. A replacement set of blades is almost the same price as the basic unit. I use pre-electric shave lotion which helps my hair stand up. Then I use a side burn trimmer first to knock it down. I follow up with the electric and I get a nice close shave without it pulling at the hair. It doesn't take me too long to do this since I've been doing it for over 30 years now. But I also only shave twice a week unless I have a special occasion that requires me not to have any stubble. Plus my wife enjoys it when I don't shave every day.
;)

It is probably much easier to use a standard razor but they just never worked well for me and I always feel like I am going to cut my face off with one. It may be my type of skin or it may just be another one of my quirks.

I read a really interesting study about beards where they had women rating men with various levels of beardiness (clean shaven, light stubble, heavy stubble, light beard, full beard). As each level of beardiness increased, so did the perceptions of maturity, masculinity and dominance - so the clean shaven guys were seen as least masculine and full beard as most masculine. Full beard was ranked as least attractive, followed by clean shaven - "light stubble" was most attractive.

Weirdly enough full-beard guys were seen as least desirable for a short-term relationship, but more desirable for a long-term relationship than clean shaven guys. Most desirable for both kinds of relationships was light stubble.

Anyways I just thought that was kind of interesting, haha. I am with Lily as well in that I prefer a little stubble, or clean shaven. Beards always tickle me!

You just made my night!
I've always hated shaving due to razor burn. Even with aftershave gel it was bad. So I bought a beard grooming kit and always just use the trimmer which leaves a light stubble. Been that way for 20 years now. This was nice to hear. :)

I am depending on the person and on the beard.

For example the beard Lily posted, I find that unattractive. Some guys when they grow beards they just grow down and down and make their chin look irrationally big. It can make someone's face look longer and change their whole look.

A well kept beard, past stubble but when it shows the man's facial definition is something I like. I very much like stubble/the 3 day beard. I think it gives a masculine edge to most guys, though I know a lot of jobs won't allow it/see it as scruffy, to me it's probably my favourite. I prefer a bit of a beard to baby face, but yeah, when it gets too long, it's not great. There's something very unattractive at the idea that someone has let themselves go to the point that they haven't even bothered trimming or neatening the forest growing on their face. For example if I had pubic hair, I would still trim it and keep it neat.

I saw my cousin about a week ago, he's currently not got a job and decided to grow a beard. It's impressive, but it's not a good look for him. He looks like he's trying to be moses or something, the way it grows makes his face look super long, and it's old manly rather than being stylish. Another friend of mine who I've always thought was hot did the same and again, if he trimmed it down/neatened it then it might be hot, but as it is I'm not keen, though I think it varies from girl to girl. I think for me it's mainly because I find men's jawlines very attractive, when someone has an unkempt beard it hides the shape and often makes it seem much rounder, which in a weird way makes them appear less masculine to me.

I don't think women prefer men with beards. I think a lot of women enjoy stubble/3 day beards on a man, but past that I think it entirely depends on the woman, and as far as I can tell most women I meet tend to be less interested in beards. It seems to be more a dudes thing as far as I can tell.

Likewise. I have a clipper that trims it back to about a days growth which I use whenever it it gets long enough to play with.
