Blond. Fucking. Highlights. On Dr. Strange.
We have an anemic Doctor Strange from a comic franchise that has always been at the forefront of religious, sexual, cultural, racial, and gender equality. I mean, Strange has always been the sort of character where you can't quite tell his background, his age, or even if he's a good guy or a bad guy but "dark and mysterious" has always been the most accurate descriptor. Instead of dark and mysterious we got Benedict Cumberbatch...the man that makes an extremely convincing addict. He's so white you can count the veins in his face! I wanted Oded Fehr for Strange but what's done is done, right?
Add to my dark and mysterious doctor being played by a white potato... instead of a story about a man being humbled as he realizes his relative insignificance despite years of believing in himself as, if not a god, at least a blessed force for good we're getting something that looks like The Matrix meets Inception.
He spent years believing that his skills as a doctor/surgeon and his ability to save lives made him better than those around him. More specifically, saving the lives no one else could fed his ego. In some versions of his origin he refuses to take the more mundane cases because why bother the best of the best with something just your average surgeon can handle?
After his accident, fixing his hands becomes an obsession because without his pride Strange is nothing. He is a man that has built himself entirely from what he's accomplished and now its all gone. His origin and journey to becoming the Sorcerer Supreme required that he first accept just how tiny and meaningless those accomplishments he prided himself on truly are and he had a Hell of time giving up his own importance. It, like many of Marvel's stories, is a very human and relatable story despite the inherent fantastical elements. Sadly, from the trailers so far I worry that we'll be losing the humanity in favor of nothing but fancy graphics and special effects.
