The company my ex worked for once offered a free and basic self defence course for all the ladies there, how to quickly break a nose and stuff like that. But I still remember what she told me once she came home after one of those classes: if you are really in danger do not simply scream "Help". Scream: "Help, Fire! Fire!" instead because people around you will be more willing to come to help you.
Thought it'd be helpful to share.

Most of those things are illegal here. I think even if it were legal I'd be scared to carry anything like mace. Knowing how clumsy I am I'd end up spraying myself in the face.

I remember a police officer once saying that you've gotta be careful with pepper spray, because if it happens to be windy outside, the pepper spray could easily end up hitting you, the victim, in the face.

I was in a karaoke bar once, where these guys had gotten into a fight. One of them sprayed the other guy with it, and suddenly all of us in that room started coughing (We could feel it in our throats) and had to get outta there quickly.

Some people are actually resistant to pepper mace, especially if they are drunk enough, or loaded with other chemicals.
I used a trick a woman taught me once to break up a bar fight, and sprayed them with the foam from the fire extinguisher. The folks just looked like a Dr Seuss illustration within seconds...

I worked as a line cook in a casino all through high school. One night, chef decided to make a sashimi special complete with a big bowl of wasabi. That bowl got sent to the dishwasher with specific instructions to wash with care. Instead, he hit it with the boiling hot water spray nozzle which created enough wasabi steam to "mace" him and two other waiters who were dropping off dishes.

My lesson from the experience: always carry wasabi paste and a hot water thermos for protection.

Duly noted, I am carrying Wasabi, Jalapeno, and a fire extinguisher. It's because I'm flying to Colombia in 3 weeks, so I'll simply tell the border patrol it's for personal use...

Going to sound kind of nuts here, but when I had to look after my horse and go up to his field in the dark I would often carry a knife. I also had one of those super heavy big torches so if someone did try to attack me I could clock them. I am talking like pitch dark on a footpath, where no one would hear me scream if there were someone about who took an opportunity to attack me. The knife I used was also just the little one I used for opening hay bales and stuff, so I wasn't like deliberately bringing a knife with me to the stables, it was more that it got dark and I was nervous and wanted some sort of feeling that I might have some defense. Bearing in mind that I used to have to walk up to the creepiest open barn stables after dark to bring the horses in to feed them with no one about and only a shitty generator for light, though close enough to a town that there might have been wanderers. It looked like exactly the sort of place someone might get murdered.

Other than that, no I do not carry any form of weaponry item for defence. I will walk in the centre of the road though in areas where people could easily grab me and use various safety tactics to try to prevent myself being attacked.

You consider a headband light when you're out at night like that? https://www.amazon.com/dp/B014JUMRR0/
Keeps your hands free and great for when you need focused light indoors also.

I've had one before, I no longer need one though as I don't have a horse anymore. The light issue wasn't the problem, obviously it was dark and creepy, but it was more that if someone had attacked me then no one would be nearby to come and help. The chances of that happening were seriously slim, but there had been some people attacking and mutilating horses near my area, so I was pretty creeped out!

I have mace and a pocket knife. I started carrying those things when I used to walk to my job and home at night when I was younger. Now I only carry them if my husband is away. Also, my neighbors have a dog that constantly runs into our yard from across the street. My 11 year old dog doesn't like other dogs, and this dog doesn't like her. So, if my yelling at that dog to get out of my yard ever fails to work, I have a back up plan to keep my geriatric fatty safe. I also sleep with wasp spray by my bed when my husband is gone.

That's exactly what I have. A pink container of pepper spray and a green boxcutter knife (from when I was an overnight stock person at the grocery store). When I'm leaving the apartment to go somewhere in the evening/night, I put one in each coat pocket...with each hand in a pocket.

I like the size of mace's kecyahin pepper spray. It's just so small, that it's can be carried under any circumstance. It just doesn't have much range.

Sabre Red spitfire is also nice and compact, easy to use.

Remember to check your expiration date!

It's a rule: my wife has to have the pepper spray on her any time she goes out without me. I can't even focus if she doesn't have something I.C.E. She's got her rules for me, too: I have to eat my greens and keep the BP down :D

I do want to sign her up for some self-defense stuff eventually. Doesn't matter what part of town you are in - when you're in a big city like ours, shady folks venture in from everywhere.

No but after reading the thread about the freeloader dude that wants to approach the cam model at the cafe I'm starting to think I should.

Oh man, I must have missed this. Another 'Help! I'm in love with a cam-girl' thread?
