the word whore in itself is an antiquated word. as well as slut bitch etc... those terms were applicable back when the world was a different place and women werent permitted/encouraged to enjoy their sexuality.
i always laugh when people use those words in a serious way.. strangely enough women are the worst perpetrators of this. usually these words are just used because someone is scared/uncomfortable of a woman owning and being proud of her sexuality in women its jealousy and in men its fear of their woman finding someone else.
if your a modern day woman your by all technicality a slut. if you get paid for things of a sexual nature you are technically a whore but who cares? those words are tantamount to using the words groovy and rad. if you use them in a non-joking way you just look stupid or like your on your way to the nursing home.

i honestly am a little bit torn on the subject simply because i think using casual derogatory language is kind of like taking a step backwards. i don't know how to put it.. its like programming women to feel bad about themselves? like oh haha hey bitch hey slut hey whore... the message eventually sets in negatively. its a bad habit to take up. words have real meaning even if we don't realize it on a conscious level and even if said words are way outdated.
i just remember being in second grade in the lunch line with a friend when she said "your such a bitch" and laughed. i started crying and she said oh i meant it as a joke you know? like how people say it all the time? i was just like no i have no idea what you mean how is calling someone something so mean a joke? this is the message id rather not send younger women.
sorry if i rambled this is a subject that i often breach with friends.

haha i thought of those words when i posted that. perhaps the more modern terms themselves arent antiquated per say but the meaning :)

I think I'm going to start calling myself a cam strumpet :D

And all of these terms, both antiquated and in vogue, have a negative edge to them--including bawd, cyprian, fancy woman, sporting lady, working girl, many of which are euphemisms but still negative. Notice that the handful of male equivalents tend to have a positive edge, even when used negatively: rake, roue, don juan, etc. Terms that although, politely, are looked down on, the underlying meanings are generally positive. One may say a certain roue is a scoundrel but very often the speaker will have a smile and a twinkling eye to say they don't really mean it.

In other words, the use of these terms for women, no matter what the reason, is blatantly sexist, and I'm not talking about being "PC." It's a real problem with our language, where women are still discriminated against. Sadly, as someone implied earlier, good luck with changing it all. But maybe we can make inroads in improving how we look at one another by at least being conscious of these words and their underlying meanings.

One inroad was the creation by feminists of the term "Ms" [no period]. It's largely caught on, but even THAT is frequently used with derision. "Okay, MS, I guess you're one of them there 'feminazis.'"

No apologies necessary...this is a great post! :thumbleft:

I'm not at all bothered about what I'm called; I'm the most fond of 'camho', for some reason though... Or websibitionist*. ;D

If someone is using the title of my job - whether it's camwhore, camho, camgirl, independent contractor, web slut.. whatever term they prefer to use - against me whilst they're launching some kind of moralistic attack on me, regardless of their preferred term for my job, I'll either initiate a civil conversation with them, correct them on any incorrect judgements / misconceptions they have, or advise them to keep their crappy opinion to themselves if they lack the ability to be mature..

Either way, I always find it wryly ironic that it's often those who cannot conduct themselves in an adult manner who tend to have the biggest problems with the adult industry.

* I thought I coined that one myself, but Google gave me 135 results. DAMNIT! I don't think any of those are specifically related to camming, though!

I love the term 'camhoe' ...I use it all the time. I don't mind if other people use that to describe me too, as long as they're just being playful and not degrading. But overall, I think camgirl is the best term to describe us because alot of us girls don't get naked or offer sexual things for $$$, so the term 'whore' or 'hoe' wouldn't apply.

I've read all the comments, and there have been some good arguments, pro and con.

While I think I understand why it is used, I'm not a fan of the "cam-whore" term. I am guessing that it is similar to 2 black guys calling themselves "the N-word",(and I'm not a fan of that) where they take a pejorative term and "empower" themselves. I'm neither black, nor a MFC girl, so I'm just speculating.

"Whore" is such a polarizing word, (for myself) I just cannot justify using it in a positive manner. It has already been said, that when "whore" is appended to another descriptor, it is never meant in a positive way. I do agree that intent and meaning can play a part in this, except in an online conversation, and especially where the two parties really don't know each other, and one of the parties can only see text. To each his own, but I don't understand the embrace of a term that can easily be turned against you.

I know this will get a lot of hoots and hollers, but for me it's a matter of respect. Why would I assume that someone I don't know is a whore, and why would I refer to them as that? After many years working with the public, I am very cynical, but I am still optimistic enough to give anyone the benefit of the doubt. And while there may be some MFC girls who may act the part, and I "might" think that way, surely it is easier for me to click "next", rather than spout off the "whore" label to her.

I've seen some interesting goings on at MFC:

->A lot of the girls are incredibly creative in coming up with ideas for shows
->The creativity even extends to the artists and musicians out there
->Many, many good dancers (and singers) out there
->I've found a lot of wit, charm, and humor
->Don't forget the occasional therapist/advice column stints
->I'm constantly amazed at the smarts and business savvy that some of the girls display on a daily basis
->And this happens often when being naked in front of the world, which takes more guts than I have

I don't perceive any of the above to be "whorish" behavior.

Lastly, I don't believe it has anything to do with expressing sexuality, more so IMO a step back in civility. Maybe a new euphemism needs to be created, I don't know. I'm OK with "cam-girl", "cam-model", or just model. But that's just me.

I just recently started referring to all models as delusional, morally bankrupt, attention starved, self loathing, dim witted, cum drunk, wind-up conniving bitch toys.

However, only as a term of endearment.

I'll let you know how that works out for me.

Sarcasm over. Carry on with your regularly scheduled programming.

Internet Erection Distributors?
That reminds me of a scene on The Big Bang Theory, in which Leonard is trying to make Penny's job at the Cheesecake Factory sound much better than it is, by saying she's a carbohydrate distributor or something like that...

But I really like "internet erection distributor", actually. It sounds professional. ^^

I'm a melodic rhyme distributor :)

As to the negative effects, well... having been teased for being a stupid lazy clutz throughout my teenage years by my brother who assured me that he really did care about me on multiple occasions... I can attest that even when used as an "endearment", it does take a person already predisposed to depression that much closer to suicide. I cannot speak for those who aren't already predisposed towards it. And since you cannot know which models are in that state (almost none of my regulars believe me about the depression bit... x.x), terms that could lead to that should be avoided.

As to lack of derogatory terms for a man, asshole and dick are the first that spring to mind. Son of a bitch is another, but that one implies that the mother is the problem, not the man. Yes, scoundrel is said with sparkling eyes, dick and asshole never are.

Personally, I try not to let the terms themselves bother me. But I can't get over bitch or cunt. I can handle being called "slut", even though I don't like sex with random people, because the basis behind that is a lack of trust (std's are a big deterrent). I can handle being called a "camwhore", because I do sell cam-sex with me. Being called a whore I find non-accurate, which is always an insult (I'm a firm believer that the best way to hurt someone is to spread lies about them. Hence, I try not to.).

wow, I wrote a lot more than I thought I would. shutting up now. :p

Whenever my Mom gets mad at me she says I am just like my father. She seems to think that is pretty insulting.

I dont really care what the guys call me as long as its not meant in an insulting way.
Popping in my room when youve never been before and just randomly calling me a whore or slut, even if its just meant as dirty talk, will get you banned though. You have to know the girl and she has to know you mean no ill intent when using certain words.

Clearly we need some new terms.

How about;
E-Geisha
Mental Stimulator

I still like the one I read on Jicky's profile; Naked internet Pal.

I'll call anyone what they like, but I'm uncomfortable with the derogatory taint of 'whore'. Whore implies that you're the McDonald's of sex, and that doesn't adequately describe what I've seen on cam. Guys don't show up in your room tipping and chatting for hours just to get their rocks off. For most guys, it's one cum and they're done. That just doesn't take more than 10 minutes.

So you have to ask yourself why guys are interested in you after they're done masturbating. Charm? Entertainment? What is it that you're giving them? What are they really paying for? I think cam models are the modern equivalent of geishas, and most guys watch and tip in return for flirtation and charm. Cam-geisha sounds way too pretentious, though.
