Sorry, didn't mean to defer from the topic.. I was just surprised by the things people had to say about them. Subjects change naturally in conversation, but this is a forum with organized topics for a reason, I suppose. Maybe there should be a food stamps thread hehe :p

Yeah, I was living with some guys in a house back in the day. All of them were university students working part time at best without scholarships. Two of them applied for food stamps and apparently weren't even close to qualifying.

I tried too and got rejected. Federal law is all students must work 20 hours a week to qualify for food stamps. When I found out that I laughed at the case worker. I'm going to an engineering school full time to get done as fast as possible. Not working during and doing it all on loans. $32,000 in debt already and only halfway through. 17 credits a semester means I'm up till midnight most days just to get homework done. Weekends are all study. I haven't had time to go to a movie in over a year. Yet I'm expected to find 20 hours free to get food stamps.

There's no leeway on a case by case basis, 20 hours or nada.

Then I look at my neighbor and his wife who let his brother live on their couch. All three are fit and able bodied, hauling stuff home to recycle, doing odd maintenance jobs for cash. Yet they convinced a doctor they were disabled in some way and can't work. So they get disability, food stamps, hell, even that free cell phone and minutes. Somehow I just don't know how to take advantage of the system very well it seems.

When I was working and partner was going to school, I could only get food stamps if he wasn't on them because he wasn't working.

When he graduated and hadn't found a job yet, we got more money.

Then he found a job, and they took our food stamps away. Luckily, he makes enough to pay for the food on top of his bills, cause I sure as hell don't.

I'll be using my tax return to pay money back to my father, AND get a new tattoo. It's hard to not spend it on something fun when you get a big chunk of money like that, at least for me. Although the adult part of me tells me to at least use some of it responsibly..

I'd have used some of my tax return to pay my dad back too, but I'll have him paid back before I even get my return. I hate owing money THAT much.
your avatar. wtf. I finally got over collossus suddenly turning gay after 30 years of being straight, and he's feeling up whatever xwoman that is? what's next, Nick Fury turning white again?

Colossus n Kittie Pryde. One of my favorite drawings ever and my woman got me a framed poster of it for Valentine's so double the romance double the awesome! the Astonishing X-men by Joss Whedon is quite the good read. And he's just gay in the ultimate universe, just like nick fury is black.

I want to chime in on the tax return/parenting thing, even though I'm way late to the party.

I'm a parent who works hard 12 months a year, I spend every cent I have on keeping my kid clothed, a roof over his head, fed and with plenty of things to stimulate his growing brain. I also get a sizable tax return and I consider that my money.

I intend to pay a few bills and pay a month of rent with my return, but the rest is mine to do with as I please so I'll be getting that tattoo that I've wanted for two years but didn't because my kid needed this or that, I'll be getting my hair and nails done because sometimes I just want to feel pampered, I'll be buying new clothes because for the last 12 months a tiny person came before me every time I needed/wanted something and I'll be buying various other things as well as spending some of it on a few nights out. Not one cent (other than rent/bills) will go towards anything child related. None of those things should be considered 'wasting' my tax return because if I wasn't a little selfish once a year, it would reflect in my parenting because I'd be fucking miserable. A happy person makes for a better parent, in my opinion.

Don't be so quick to judge, Kunra. Some people are strapped for cash all year long, but have that little extra come tax season to actually make them happy and a little happiness can go a long way.

Putting some of the money toward rent/bills is very responsible. It helps you get ahead of things and thus, better provide for your child.

I also imagine if your child needed a trip to the dentist and you had to choose between spending your tax return on your tattoo or the dentist, you would choose the dentist.

You do not fall under the category of wasting your tax return at all.

The people I am referring to are making a different choice.

You're right, I'd pick the dentist. But I'd cry about it in the shower when nobody was looking.

Sounds like something I'd tip for
