Funny you guys mention this! I was just trying to figure out what domain name would be best for something like this! Given that my dad's asked about my job and all too, haha. I was just going to make the lie I told him a little more streamlined and set up prettily. :3 LIES (Logical Internet Enterprise Systems) Central?

I tell my parent's I work at theScottsdaleDirectory.com selling ads. The have TheThousandOaksDirectory.com as well as many others. The sites are all set up and I tell them I sell ads online and get 50% commission so that's why I stay. ;)

At first I hid MFC from my friends and family. I still had a day job at a thrift store and I told them I was doing freelance photoshop work on the side. But my family started to realize something was weird about 2-3 weeks in to camming since I still live at home (im 19!) So I decided to come clean because I really don't like to lie and I felt like hiding it only made camming seem worse. While of course my parents would rather see me doing something else, they know I need the money and they didn't try to stop me.. But yeah.. now most of my best friends know. My boyfriends parents think I still work at a thrift store.. and as for other people I just try to avoid the topic when work comes up because like I said I really dont like lying. If they press the topic though I have no choice but to whip out the old photoshop excuse and hope they arent in need of a graphic designer :p

You could start a legit business that charges a small fee to be cam models online job cover story.

A small monthly fee gets you a legit customer service number, so if any parents call to "see if its legit" they get greeted with a friendly "Hello, OSW services, how may I help you?"

They dont' have all the extras Paulie mentions, like fake spreadsheets and company logos, but google "answering service". Lots of companies exist that provide human operators to take inbound calls and either forward a call to you or give the caller a professional response:

Oper: "Hello, OSW Services. How may I direct your call?"
Caller: "Can I speak with Joe Blow?"
Oper: "One moment, please." [pauses to check if you are actually 'on-call' at your home line, cell phone, etc.]
Oper: "I'm sorry, Mr. Blow is not available (away from his desk, out of the office, etc.). Can I take a message / connect you to his voice mail?"

Such services have limits. They generally won't outright lie for you and make up things to tell the caller. Also, some states have wire fraud / telco / pretexting (a legalese buzzword for lying) laws stating if a caller asks "is this an answering service?", the operator has to say so. Most, though, will do so in a professional manner:

Oper: "Yes, OSW Services is a service company. This is an answering service that handles inbound calls when Mr. Blow is not available. I'm not aware of the specifics of their business, but I'm sure Mr. Blow could provide more details once he is free."

This is probably overkill for most people. After all, when does a "cover story" become a carefully crafted web of lies, the scope and duration of which is sure to cause more animosity than the simple truth when it is inevitably revealed?

Still, if a person needs a more professional front, they can be great. After all, they are used by many "for real" businesses.

Well, my family knows about the companies I own and knows that as my primary source of income. They don't know about the porn or the webcamming. There would be no problem with it, though I might get the "you're wasting your MBA" lecture.
I read through the thread and I see the usual suggestions of work from home and that's pretty much what I tell them. I say I do radio voice over work (I do on occasion, they think its more often), internet marketing for a friends company ( I do, but they dont know it's BDSM), and modeling (again I leave off the porn). It fills my time and keeps me happy.
I did have one near-miss at xmas when one camming company sent my checks to my parents house, since I wouldnt be home for a month. My mom was curious about who they were. Scrambled to cover that one quickly!

If your family is nosy and tech savy, I'd say it's a fair bet they either know or will quickly find out. But for now say you sell advertising online or work for a call forwarding service for doctors. These are jobs that work from home and require you to keep somewhat regular hours. Tell them firmly that they can't come over because you're WORKING. My family lives 400 miles away, but friends used to stop in all the time. They know what I do now, but until I said I'm working, gtfo, they thought dropping in was ok.
Establish your routine and stick to it, that's the best way to do it.

This post is pretty funny!

I go to school three nights a week, and I do work part-time as a receptionist. Before camming I did Accounts Receivable and was making $15 an hour with benefits, but at the time I had some personal family stuff going on, and I was let go because I wasn't really focused, which sucked. After I continued with AR work, but unfortunately my pay went back down to $10 because no one wants to pay decent in this crappy economy, I can understand why but still...

Anyways I found out about camming a few years ago, I used to do much better than I do now, I guess because I don't go on as much, and with MFC I used to do really well on there also, and was always in the top row, but then the cam scores became crazy, and my score drops every time I log off if I haven't made much, and that makes the traffic in my room crap. So it's a lot slower for me then it used to be. But I guess it is what it is. I was hoping those "tags" would work, because that wasn't there the last time I was on MFC, but even with the tags it doesn't seem to make a difference.

Those job listings above are good. My friend works for arise
And she is always busy. Good cover up lol

Thanks!! I have more too....but yes, any of these can be a cover up or just see about working one part time around your webcam schedule. I think I am going to be telling people I am doing some medical billing/coding since that is what i am going to school for and i have a friend who is a doctor that owns his own practice.....

Prior to MFC I worked at LaSenza... absolutely loved it there until the manager changed. I refuse to work for a stuck up french you know twat! MFC gave me an excellent opportunity to get out of there! Only problem was I didn't know what to tell friends/family.

I was honest with my mom, not right away but over time of being "unemployed" and buying a laptop she knew something was up.

Her reaction? Didn't really seem to bother her all that much, she is happy I am making money safely. My mom is real easy going and open minded. However no one else in my family knows. They all think I am still working at LaSenza...

My family lives pretty far from me so they think I still work at the last place I was at before I started camming. My fiances family is a different story. His grandmother pops in randomely like every other fuckin day. She thinks I am still working at my old job and it is getting really frustrating trying to keep up the lie. She came over the other night and I had to run upstairs and hang out in the bedroom for like an hour till she left. I am thinking we could tell her I got laid off and am getting unemployment, than I can "jobsearch" for a few months than make up some night shift type factory job or something.....

Bringing this thread back from the dead to get more feedback on this discussion.

I used to tell people I worked as a personal assistant/ customer service/answered emails for a small business. I don't know if it was the way I said it, or if they were confused, but I would get tilted heads when I told people. So I need a better excuse this time around. LOL.

What do you tell people you do for a living when they ask you? I have only told a few people the truth, only the ones that really need to know. But when Xmas comes around, I'm not telling "uncle tom" that I flick my bean on the interwebs when he asks me what my hobbies are.

Luckily, for now I actually have two jobs outside of MFC. But if I decide to quit those jobs, I need a plan of what to tell people. Or if I'm not working and decide to go on MFC, I need an excuse as to why I can't go out with them.

My brother actually does have a job doing internet marketing and is always very vague about it when describing it to my parents, mainly because they are pretty clueless about technology. So, it always makes me smile when cam models talk about telling people they do internet marketing.

My friends know I cam, but for parents/extended family... my alias job is writing erotic stories and selling them on the internet

I decided on this because in general I have a really open&positive relationship with my parents and I like being able to talk to them honestly. This way, I get to say a lot of stuff that is the truth (an established site provides the platform and sends my paychecks; I have a profile there; members pay to buy my stories, can "tip" me just because they're fans, and can request custom stories; I use social media for personal marketing; and so on and so forth). So it's like everything I talk to them about when they ask about work is the truth ...except for the detail that I am not writing the erotic content :p. I will tell them the whole truth eventually.

I always figured saying you do internet marketing/sales had two advantage, first it is so vague that you generally deflect questions, just learn some lingo. Second it is mostly true you are doing marketing and sales on the internet the product is yourself. :-D

I saw my ex SO recently and she is running a call center, the her boyfriend owns. In describing her employees I realized that the job would fit very well as a camgirl cover job. You work from home,
the hours can very from week to week, the company really frowns on being interrupted, thus preventing Mom from dropping by. Of course the pay isn't as good (generally) although her top performing employees can make close to 40K a year.

I buy nice clothes from Goodwill and resell them on Ebay.

So, I just tell Mumzie that all my income comes from there.

Most friends I've been really open with (oddly the ones that I thought would take it best took it the worst, c'est la vie).

But for random strangers whom I don't trust, it might not be a great idea to spout off about being a camgirl. I told my boyfriend what I did, and with that info alone he was able to find my MFC profile (he enjoyed figuring out that puzzle!), but if he could do it, I'm sure others could as well. That said, depending on the person, I either tell them that I am a freelance model or that I do paid research that is too confidential to talk about (use this, and people will think you're a spy, haha).

My previous job was in the IT field and I worked overnights from home, so most just assume that I still do that. I don't really care if my mum knows eventually, especially if it means giving me the opportunity to go back to school and focus more on writing, it's really just about timing.
