Just finished the interview with Rachel. We had a really interesting discussion about how to define camming and legislating female sexuality. This is a great opportunity for us to get our voices out there without our stories being boxed into a sensational narrative! :)

Just spoke with Rachel! It was a great conversation, she's very friendly and I felt totally at ease which helped me open up and ramble (a lot) about my thoughts :D it's rare to feel both heard and understood so I'm very glad I got to have this convo and I'm excited to see the final results!! :)

Getting a representative sample of cam models to be interviewed must be challenging, especially in terms of sexual commerce and labour.
ACF would give a pretty good cross representation of one small section of the community but not so good on others. Model networks in most places tend to be strung together based on existing or pre-existing studios.

For example many older Czech/ Slovak/ Ukrainian models (age 25-35) started in the same type of studio system, almost all still working would work solo now. Most would know of each other, but they don't really get together much.
Compare this to the Romanian system where many models work closely with one another in their particular location. Those moving from studios to working solo often live in the same apartment block with other models.

Hopefully the OP will find a few models who can get her access into some of these networks. Research of this type is always difficult.

I interviewed with Rachel last week and had a great time. She was very respectful and professional but also down to earth. As a new cam model, I didn't have much experience to draw from but I still felt able to contribute and she offered insight into her own experiences within the industry. My gift card arrived by e-mail exactly as promised. I would highly recommend speaking with her! She's compiling information that I wish existed when I started.

I interviewed with Rachel and felt at ease, I think she is very professional and I am so excited to have helped her research, it will be very interesting to see how everyone answered and I'm glad I did it. I would recommend doing this to anyone interested :)

I interviewed with Rachel and it was great. I also used the Amazon gift card to purchase anal plugs. I agreed to the interview because I love to talk and I've always been a part of the school paper and many other journalism kinds of things, so I know what it's like to NOT have people talk to you when you just need one itty bitty quote. But that's not her case. I'm just saying in general.

This woman is an inspiration to me and a kick in the face to all the lames who try to tell us that there's no life after being a camgirl.

I just finished interviewing with Rachel. I felt that phone-call type anxiety beforehand but she was really warm and it went really quickly :) I appreciated her point of view and definitely think if you're interested to go for it!

I thought it was a nice introduction to the topic :) Congrats on being published again, too! However, I do always roll my eyes a bit when I see us getting referred to as amateurs. But that might just be a personal preference, haha.

Why is it time to break the silence?

The title has a whiff of click-bait about it, but I suppose that's what works best. I'm unclear about the intent of this article. It almost sounds like you're daring authorities and radical feminists to come after webcamming. The industry is hardly operating in secret, given that just about everyone who's ever checked out internet porn, which is nearly everyone, has likely come across advertising for LJ or some other cam site. I don't see how throwing down the gauntlet to potential adversaries helps models working in the industry, nor how it would help them maintain their privacy should the subject of webcamming become a topic of general interest.

There's an error, which you should have caught, having worked in the industry yourself. "The banking system" does not charge "between 7% and 15% for providing payment facilities – much more than the 2% to 3% they usually charge ". Payment processors like CCBill and DDI charge those fees to site operators, not banks.

Unfortunately with so few words to play with its hard to go into an real depth. Thank you for your points about CCBill and DDI . They are really helpful.

The original article I wrote was somewhat edited and I agree there is nothing amateur about a lot of the women I interviewed

It's not only the fault of CCBill that the charges in adult are higher. The credit card companies and banks also charge higher fees for what they consider "high-risk" businesses, if they are even willing to take you as a customer.
Also some payment processors take the risk for chargebacks and hence charge a higher percentage. If you take the chargebacks yourself you pay a lower fee.

Interesting. I really like when sexworkers write about SW and then other SWers might find the writings and then write about SW themselves. I love that the voice of SWers is becoming stronger in this way.

I'm writing a paper too! I'm coming from a fine art perspective so it may be different to how you approach it but I've been able to apply some of the feminist discourse about porn to my theories about webcam modelling. My paper is about performing sexuality within patriarchal structures.

I'm sure you've done a good amount of research but here's what I've particularly enjoyed reading. Worth putting down for anyone else who might be interested in reading more about this kind of stuff:

This book has been a great resource for me to intro me into the idea of third wave feminism and girlie feminism. In particular chapter 11. BUST-ing the Third Wave: Barbies, Blowjobs and Girlie Feminism. Mainstreaming Sex: The sexualisation of Western Culture. Feona Attwood.
