I found this really interesting and the way its written adds some humor to an otherwise pretty screwed up article.

6 terrifying islands.

Here is just an excerpt about one of the islands:

#3. Izu Islands

So there's this chain of islands, in some far-off magical world (called Japan), and on these islands is contained unimaginable horror.

You know how right now you're breathing air? Well depending on where you are, odds are it's fairly standard stuff: mostly full of oxygen, carbon dioxide, nitrogen and a bunch of other shit. Ideally, it's probably lacking in sulfur.

Not so on the Izu Islands! Thanks to some nasty volcano-related incidents, the island's air is pumped full of delicious sulfur! The highest concentration of the gas on the entire fucking planet no less. It's OK though because nobody lives there.

Oh wait, they totally still live there

For some reason, the island has retained most of its pre-volcano population, and since the volcano never stopped spewing eggy gas, now they live day and night with a gas mask either on their face, or at their side. In the middle of the night, air raid sirens go off because the gas levels are dangerously high and people would start to die. People live their entire lives like this.

EDIT: I guess it would help if I added the links lol

I got a good laugh out of Izu Islands looking like an old lady's head. It really does look like that!

Also, semi-related, I find it fascinating at the amount of small islands in the middle of nowhere, with super small populations. One school, one grocery store, etc. Completely isolated. I'm not sure I could ever live like that, but it would be interesting to visit such a place!

Must be a nice quiet place since everyone's masked...

If I remember right, there was a Dr Who where the ppl had morphed into gas mask face critters in some sanitarium looking place. Much akin to feet binding, I also wonder if the constant pressure of the mask is having any effect on their skull shape.... :?
Family heritage or not, I'd be sooo outa there so long ago....

oh wow, I remembered reading somewhere about the crocodile massacre of Japanese troops heh

I cant help but wonder if they dont just stay out of lack of money to move, or fear to move and where to even go. Im surprised there wasnt a giant movement to get them out of there and relocate them already.

Part of it did mention that the people who stayed are being paid by scientists to see the effect it has on humans :?

Meh, the dead are nothing to fear. Besides I may finally be able to build that skull throne I've always wanted.
