My laptop just bit the dust finally and I need a replacement pretty soon. I was thinking

I'll invest in something more powerful down the pipe but I can't really justify spending more than 600 at the moment (but feel free to convince me I need something more so I don't feel bad about it.)

I would look at a Windows machine.. you will end up getting much more bang for your buck. You should be able to pick up something with 16GB of RAM and a 128SSD, probably with an AMD processor, if you are lucky maybe even something with an i7.

You might also have less trouble getting a Windows machine to run well on various cam sites.

I would recommend the Acer Predator Helios 300. It costs more but it is a way better computer, it has a better processor, double the amount of ram, an 256GB ssd, a powerful graphics card, a bigger higher resolution screen,an HDMI out port and a total of 4 USB ports. If you get this machine you won't have to buy anything new in a year or two, I predict that you will be able to use this for at least five years with out having to upgrade.

Here is a review on the Laptop that Linus Tech tips did recently.

I actually picked up an HP at Best Buy with 12g and amd but it was slow as hell so I'm gonna return it. I was very underwhelmed so I'm gonna up the price range.

I'm seriously considering this one or something in this range now, thank you!

I used to be a big proponent of AMD processors years ago. But, everything I've used lately which were AMD were very slow. Intel i7 is where you want to be, and with at least 8GB ram. I'm on a 3 year old ASUS laptop with an i7Gen3 processorr with 8GB ram and it is still very capable of everything I need. About the only thing I'm going to do is put in a SSD drive to help speed up the disk I/O. One thing to keep in mind is that most laptops still come with 5400rpm HDD's. SSD's are becoming more common, which speeds up the system significantly.

Would you say the acer above is a solid choice? It's i7 and ssd on top of the 16g of ram

I know many whom like Acer, and have had no issues with them. So, I would think it's a good choice. I would do some quick searches on reliability for it though, just to make sure that you're comfortable with the purchase.

Amazon reviewers for computers are brutal and the majority don't know a thing about tech so it's hard to get an accurate idea. I'll do some thorough research though for sure, thank you.

I'd suggest looking at this computer on or consider buying from Newegg. Newegg customers tend to be more tech savvy, so reviews tend to be more reliable.

Plus a free copy of rocket league on new egg so . There's an Msi that looks really good on there so I think that's what I'll probably go with. Does anyone know anything about the gigabyte brand before I decide for sure?

Good brand. When I used to build whitebox PC's, that is what I used for mainboards. Never a problem.

In my opinion those two are not worth it. You get a Geforce GTX 1060 GPU in the one I posted while the two you linked are only has a Geforce GTX 1050 Ti GPU. The only thing that those two laptop has got going for them is that they have more storage capacity. Price to performance the Acer Predator Helios 300 is the best laptop on the market right now and if you need more hard drive space throw in another $100 and you can get a 2TB hard drive for it.

I read extensive reviews on the Helios and it seemed like there were some serious quality control issues that I didn't really wanna deal with which is why I'm considering the other two.

The only thing I have seen people complain about is the screen glow, but that is something which is hard to avoid with an IPS panel. However a bad IPS panel is still better than a good TN panel, because you get better colors and viewing angles.

For camming it'll be great! For gaming, well :(

Wish it had Thunderbolt 3, that way you could plug in an external GPU an extend its life.

Well I've gotta atleast try to disguise it as a work pc so I can claim it on my taxes ;p

It just so happens that gaming computers tend to be excellent for camming.
