Saw my kid having a conversation in Russian with someone else on FB today, and google translator isn't giving me any results. I want to know wtf she is talking about, but I don't want her thinking I'm being nosy. Halp!

Just curious: How'd your kid learn Russian so young? I'd be proud. That's a seriously hard language.

A Russian model once told me that Google's not great. Here is another Russian-English translator from Promt, which is supposedly better, so you might want to give that a try.

It could also be code. If they're just typing in Cyrllic, you can use an online transliteration tool to convert Cyrllic into Latin letters.

http://translit.cc/

Another way to use the Cyrllic alphabet as code is to match the keyboard positions of a Cyrllic to those on a Latin QWERTY keyboard layout. Google translator shows the Cyrillic keyboard when you try to tranlate RU to EN if you switch the input method on the lower left-hand corner of the input box.

But yeah, ideally get Evelyn or someone like her to help you out. Russian idioms and slang will throw machine translators for a loop. If they use number shortcuts like 4 for ч and 6 for б, which some Russians do, even when typing Cyrillic, it gets even harder.

She's been studying it as kinda a hobby for a couple of years now, and she has a couple of close friends who are Russian.

Thanks for the info, I'm gonna give that translator a try now.

I don't know Russian, but just as a heads up...if you use any translator program, it will have a more difficult time if the characters aren't English characters. :twocents-02cents:
