So, this is embarrassing, and I apologize in advance for being so basic but...How do you wear your garter belts?

I recently ordered one and received it! With great stockings! But I've come to the realization that there is a whole world of lingerie and I don't know even the very basic things. Curse my Jiggles for being lazy and preferring nudity to sexy underwear!

When garter belts and stockings were standard daily wear, the garter belt went under the panties. If it was over, you'd have trouble going to the bathroom. If you're wanting to keep the stockings and garter on after taking panties off on cam, again, panties on top, otherwise you'll have to unclip and reclip the stockings and that's a pain.

From what I recall looking this up ages ago, technically you're supposed to wear panties under the garter belt. When you go the bathroom you unhook the garter belt from around your waist and pull it and your underwear down together (you do not unhook the stockings and do it that way). Wearing the panties over the garter is a myth from what I recall.
I've seen it both ways though, and when I wear mine I usually go with whatever is most practical at the moment. Some styles don't really allow for you to wear panties over it, but those are usually more snazzy ones. Most cheapy ones you find on yandy and amazon aren't going to really be 'proper' garter belts. They sit too low on the hips and don't have any actually ability to hold up stockings for actual wear.
I wouldn't really worry about it too much. Most people aren't going to know which way is proper or not so unless you're really committed to lingerie authenticity I wouldn't make a big deal out of it.

I always wear undies underneath but its such a pain to take them off when I reach my panties off goal so I might start wearing them over! I didn't even think about doing that until this thread lol! Thanks guys!

i'd go with the one that said depends what u are wearing them for )) i mean yes from what i know they do go under, but if u go out and there is a potential quickie)) i wouldnt wanna make it harder to achieve )) also for camming definetly over for easier removal

UPDATE: Managed to get these things on. Took me two hours to figure out. It was like having to learn how to hook my bra for the first time all over again. Wow.

I have yet to master the art of adjusting the suspenders properly so that I can keep the hoisery up but also not lose them when I sit down. This is a science!

Garters are just early form stockings so traditional use is over the panties. However it's impractical for camming when your panties need to be removed easily. However I don't think members care as long as the outcome remains the same.

I sort of miss the early days of SM when girls would wear individual garters.

Panties under garter belt is the classic pinup. But does it really matter? Most people are not going to care.

There are also snap on, tie on panties, which kind of avoid the whole, problem of panties under garter belt.

Or just incorporate sensually undo, and re do each clasp to get the panties off of your act.
Or play up having the panties around your thighs as part of the act.

FYI stockings that are made for garters are so much easier to use with a garter belt. No slip stockings, they're much harder to use with a garter belt. I just it's much harder to get the clips on, and they tend to pop off.

It's awkward when the model has to unhook the stockings to remove them and then rehook them.

Then again, I've always been a panties over the garter kind of guy. Seeing a hot girl in a nice garter and stockings, and nothing else, is really hot. Watching her take her panties down smoothly, also hot. Watching her fumble around to get her panties off? Yeah, not so much. Side note, while the panties/garter/stockings one piece may look nice, I don't like them as much because the stockings come off when the panties do. And longer time members here know about my stockings/socks love.

I know many garters now a days are designed to go over the panties for how they look, but it's impractical for things like stripping (in clubs that do full nude) or camming, and also impractical for the woman going to the bathroom or if she is going to be having some bedroom fun. I've even seen it in porn videos where the girl is wearing the garter over the panties and they have to actually do a cut right after she starts pulling them down because she has to unhook and rehook.

In your personal life, do it how you want. If you're camming, put the garter under the panties.

If I were to wear the garter over my underwear and do it this way, I'd wind up having to adjust the legwarmers again every time I peed, and I drink lots of water so I pee a lot. Even without moving the legwarmers/socks/stockings, undoing the belt makes them sag so I still have to adjust them, and some stockings I've owned would fall all the way off and I'd have to completely put them back on.

My first time exposure to the mention of stockings and what order to wear them in was actually in a puberty book written by an older woman - pads that clip onto belts older. In one part, she mentioned watching her mom get dressed in the mornings as a little kid, and mentioned that her mom put her stockings on first, following with panties, and on her period it was garter belt and stockings, followed by by pad belt and pad, and panties over the top. Maybe that lady's mom was just weird, who knows.

With some of my other garters it would work both ways no problem though. Garter on top has always been more aesthetically pleasing to me, and unhooking the garter and pulling everything down has never been problem for me personally. I suppose it just depends on what your working with. Leg warmers are a lot heavier than stockings so they'd be more apt to fall down the way I do it so I can see why that wouldn't be practical in that circumstance.

I choose not to wear garter belts but i have them in case they are requested. (they only have like 4 times the 6 years i've been at this) if i do wear it on cam, someone asks me to take it all off at some point, then i have to reput my stockings on and rehook them. it's pain in my ass imo.

Some modern stockings are pretty good at staying up - I have a couple pairs that keep themselves up, not from the stay-up grip stuff, but because they go to the tops of my legs, roll up on themselves, and dig in - one of the rare times that short legs are a bonus. Sometimes I attach garters to them for the aesthetic, but I also just wear them on their own plenty.

I've also had vintage stockings, in a trunk of old clothes from my grandma, and ooh boy those do not stay up for anything when not supported. The belt that came with them was just an elastic band with no clasp, so that seemed intended for under-underwear use.

My favorite garter belt is one of the 6-hook affairs with really thick clips that can handle anything from a fishnet to a heavy sock. It's designed to be worn at the waist and can work over or under. It seems like most modern lingerie is meant to be worn with garters on top, while vintage reproductions are modeled both ways.

What I don't really get the functionality of are the open-bottom girdles with garters attached - the longer Rago ones. You obviously can't wear underwear over them because they're too long and also that's not how you girdle, but wearing underwear under them means that you have to take the whole thing off to go to the bathroom even if you don't wear stockings with it, and they are way more hardcore than Spanx, the amount of effort it takes to get them on and off is almost exhausting. Some of the pants-style girdles have a crotch vent so you can pee without taking them off, are these just supposed to be worn commando?

That's why I mentioned that modern garters tend to be more for appearance than functionality. Modern stockings generally stay up on their own and don't need the support, so even if you get a set of lingerie with a garter, it is designed to normally be worn with the garter over the panties, because it looks better that way. You can still get some sets that look equally good worn either way, but they're also generally more expensive than other sets. It really comes down to the panties with these sets. Panties that sit lower on the hips are probably more uncomfortable over the garter because they're over the straps, while panties that are designed to go higher on your hips will feel better because they go over the belt and not the straps.
