I'm a television production graduate with already a good amount of experience with cinematography, editing and generally creating fulfilling videos that meet the requirements set by certain clients. However, I'm currently having a really bad dry spell with work…

A friend of mine jokingly suggested I make porn videos seeing as this industry makes a ton of money. I laughed it off but later began to consider it and decided to research whether this was a plausible career option. It seems like this could be a great job on the side for me, keeping it separate from my primary video work until something comes up again.

I guess I'm here to just ask how I should advertise my services and whether anyone like to utilise me? I was thinking about offering myself for free for a while just to help build my resume for porn editing alone. Obviously I don't want a video production company to take advantage of me so are there any amateurs/cam girls who need help editing any videos? This will be in the form of a 'you scratch my back and I'll scratch yours' kind of deal, with my services being advertised by my client once what is asked of me has been completed.

As an additional note, I have a professional understanding of Adobe Premiere (general video editing), After Effects (animated logos, special effects etc.) and Logic (sound editing) so I should be well equipped for whatever is asked of me.

Thanks!

(If I'm posting this in the wrong place then please inform me.)

I have been clip making for 2 years and this type of service is not needed mostly because we teach ourselves. I do not have a degree in video editing but I'm self taught with adobe after effects and I edit everything myself (like most of us do). It's very easy to watch free tutorials and teach yourself. Not many people would be willing to pay for this type of service. Most girls either do it themselves or have a spouse who can edit. Most of us who do clips as a primary job already know how to edit since it's what we do everyday.

If you want to do this, then get going with the portfolio. There's plenty of source material (porn) out there you can re-edit, set to music, etc, just to get experience. Vimeo is full of this type of thing, although, even there, the best stuff is original. If you've done this seriously, you should already be using Vimeo and/or YT to show your work. Once you make a reputation that way, you will have a much better chance of models showing an interest in working with you, and you won't have them thinking you're just some hack trying to make a buck off them. As Bianca said, models can do basic editing just fine, and unless you demonstrate that you can make them more money, they have no reason to pay you.

Oh, and as far as the other thing: of course people will take advantage of you. It's called paying dues, whether it's porn or wedding videos. Until you've proven your worth, no one is going to make your life easy.

I would like to add something as well- I would never give some random guy my content either- most like every other model. First off you could sell it and pirate it and you don't have anybody to back you up that your not a scum bag- now I am not saying you are one I am just saying as a model I would never trust somebody I don't know with my video's. On top of this I just don't see a need for your services unless you can do what Missa can do (Then Maybe) but it would have to be some serious serious effect work because general effect work (even with adobe after effects) there are free tutorials everywhere and step by step stuff that is very easy to follow and if I can do it with no graphic design background I feel like most models can do the same thing. Here is her store : http://clips4sale.com/studio/51941/Missa#startingpoint : so unless you can do some crazy stuff and have a bunch of successful models who can vouch for you then you MAY have a shot but if you can't do crazy effects then I see no need for services. Also even if you had people vouch for you most models are not going to give you there content.

I disagree about no models being interested in editing services, it takes forever and watching yourself objectively is really hard for many. My company used to offer this service and we were so busy with edits it's was cutting into our main work, shooting, so much that we had to discontinue offering it. Then again, I am a trustworthy model in the community myself and had a partnership deal with a member site platform. This is not likely to be your experience advertising this way because as stated above, you are not trustworthy and independent adult performers aren't about to just send all their hard work to some random guy for free.

My suggestion would be to target the bigger production houses, and offer your services through freelancer and other sites of the like. Many of them have in house editors but many of them outsource it all. You'll be competing with the rock bottom prices of overseas freelancers but with a decent body of work in your portfolio (it doesn't have to be porn to show what you can do) you might still get jobs.

I thought there were no stable editing jobs in the porn industry (or barely any) cause everything is changing and things are just... free on the internet? Amateur video seems to be actually in right now but many go beyond that and have skills to do much more.
But there is so much free porn on the internet studios don't make films like they used to. At least is what i heard but don't know how it is really...never tried to get an editing job but I edit my own videos and sold a lot of them already on mfc.
These days people expect someone to do several jobs - producing, directing , editing etc all in one when they hire.
I think would be maybe easier to find editing jobs in actors reels or in music videos or commercials. But also if you actually got editing gigs in porn videos how would you use that as your reel when you yourself say it would only be temporary until something comes along?Because other jobs would be seeking similar to their own stuff not porn as example.

Sorry about leaving these replies a little late, ladies. I'll reply to you all as well as I can. Here goes!

This is understandable. There are indeed a lot of models who do all this themselves and are self-taught. However, I have seen a lot of model profile designs that really don't look good at all with them being all cluttered and unorganised. I have also seen quite a few videos that I believe I personal could have out together better in order for them to be more satisfactory for the customer. Overall, I was offering my services for free for a short time with the view of gaining a portfolio that would both advertise the model and myself as an editor. I do concur with your opinion though!

I already have a good-standing portfolio for all the work I've done within the video content production industry so far. A lot of it can be seen on my current Vimeo account too! But I wasn't about to post it all on this forum. I do need to keep some sort of privacy of course. I'll only be sending my portfolio to production companies and any models who take interest in my services. However, I do indeed need to get to building some sort of editing portfolio involving existing porn. I was thinking about doing a few compilations and mini-trailers for a few pornstars/camgirls in the form of a portfolio building task for myself and place them on some sort of video sharing site like Vimeo. As for your final point, I'll take that as a tough love pep talk. I shall prove my worth! \( ̄▽ ̄;)

I would like to add something as well- I would never give some random guy my content either- most like every other model. First off you could sell it and pirate it and you don't have anybody to back you up that your not a scum bag- now I am not saying you are one I am just saying as a model I would never trust somebody I don't know with my video's. This is also another very understandable concern. All I can do is really vouch for myself which means nothing to any of you guys. I could be some sort of perverted creep with a porn addiction… but only my girlfriends knows about that :') haha. All jokes aside, I know I'll need to build a very trusting relationship with a few cam artists/companies in order to be able to expand from there. It's pretty much the same with what I've done in past work already. Someone will give me a good break and if I do well and make a video which surpasses their standards then word spreads to someone else and I can even advertise to say I've done work for this other person/company previously. This then helps to build on the trusting issue. Also I've had a look at some of Missa's work and… my goodness… wow! O_O The practical effects featured (such as the shewolf one) were beyond outstanding! As for visual effects there didn't seem to be anything that stood out for me to be out of my stand procedure of editing work. I might've missed something I don't know but these videos seem to be heavy with practical (on set) effects.

Thank you for your supportive reply! :) I think your definitely right about getting in contact with a company and maybe having them outsource some work to me. I was going to touch up on the fact that some models may not personally enjoy seeing themselves in an objective manner and would prefer to have someone else to edit for them. And as I've said in another reply, in order for any sort of trust to be put into myself by a model I would have to begin building a portfolio featuring some reliable references who can vouch for me. That being said, I think it might actually be best if I find a company to contact… I have a portfolio of my existing work available so maybe there is something I've done which will stand out to someone working within this industry.

Oh? I've read a lot of stories about a ton of people who have had stable income from just editing porn videos. Unless they were just the cream of the crop? As for other skills, I have previously wrote, produced, directed, edited and generally assisted on quite a few short films, adverts, video web content and training videos for corporations. Soooo I guess I have those additional skills if needs be… However, I just thought concentrating on editing work would be more preferred for a lot of people and companies within this industry. As for using porn on my main portfolio… I just wouldn't do that! No video content companies would take on anyone with a background in porn editing/filmmaking so my plan was to create a completely separate portfolio altogether. Two portfolios for two industries.

Thank you for all the replies so far everyone. I'm very keen to research into this more so if anyone is able to point me towards any other logic directions with this then by all means show me the way! I'm gonna be lingering around this forum so if anyone has another other question, opinions or qualms then by all means get in touch with me!
