There is a file extension .jif that was in use at the time I was introduced to .gif. Using a hard g makes that situation less confusing. I've always known that the hard g is "wrong", but I don't care. I also won't make any excuses like "it's 'graphics', not 'jraphics'", because acronyms simply don't have any such rule that they follow (acronyms and initialisms are usually pronounced according to whatever is easiest and catches on). I just do what I want, that's all.
