After 3 weeks of double talk through numerous emails, they made us a terrible offer. We were really expecting more from this company being that they've been around a long time and their website is full of information. We couldn't find any real reviews online about them though, so I guess we had to go through the entire process just to make one. Has anyone else submitted to Homegrown Video (homegrownsubmittals.com)?

I've never heard of them, but looking at their latest blog post about requiring ID and all that's totally legit, but of course that doesn't mean they are. Did they pay you what they offered or are you just saying no?

My biggest question if you don't mind me asking, you mentioned a "terrible offer" but I'd love to know what the offer was, the cost of running a site has much more overhead than I could have imagined prior to starting a site myself, their offer may be reasonable, or completely terrible. You just have to consider that they may only make $40-60 off of your video alone, depending on their setup.

Is there a reason you can't sell your own clips through something like ManyVids, Clips4sale, Clipvia etc?

Selling a video up front to be redistributed isn't worth it unless
-you're making royalties (are they paying you royalties? Their FAQ wasn't really clear)
-They are actually providing set, equipment, shooting you & you're getting paid per scene when you show up to work (IE actual porn).

Selling the clip you made for a once time price and handing over the licence for someone else to redistribute as they see fit & profit off indefinitely seems like a crappy deal, if thats how they operate.

We're getting things set up on Xtube at the moment as an alternative. Yes, what they do is purchase the video including all distribution rights, and offer you a one time cash payment. We're new at this, and so we naively thought that would be a good idea. Anyways, we waited 2 weeks for an offer of $350. That may not sound bad, but we were selling 60 minutes of HD footage which included foreplay, oral, intercourse, and two cumshots all shot in POV and at three separate angles. The production quality was fairly high in our minds, and were expecting an offer closer to $800 based off of their "rates" page. We are both fit and attractive, and as a white male and black woman, we are definitely "niche". Here is what is fucked up though, they state that they offer bonuses, and give a range of what they pay for what, and their offer was $50 below the lowest rate listed on the page, and that didn't include the $300 in bonuses we qualified for (extra cumshot, extra angles, and for including 30 high res images.)

The worst part was communication with these people. The person who reviews submissions, Crystal, lied to us multiple times saying things like "I'll review your scene tomorrow", and then ignored us for days; this is after being told that our scene was already under review a week before. We like honesty from people, I mean just say that your schedule is hectic and it will be a couple of days, right?

Just like breaking into any industry, there are lots of slimy people in porn looking to make big profit off of your hard work. When we Googled "sell homemade amateur porn", their site is one of the top results; so hopefully other people in our situation will see this and think twice about submitting to them.

In the amount of time it took for them to get back to us, we established a Tumblr and Pornhub page that have been getting a ton of attention. And now, we can see just how profitable this venture could be; but not if we don't retain or share the distribution rights ourselves.

You should definitely look into selling the clip(s) yourselves on sites like Clips4Sale! You can keep the rights to your videos, you set your own price, and you get 60% every time the video sells from now til you take the video down. (If 60% doesn't sound like much, remember that you set your own price; so if you wanted to make, say, $30 for each sale, you would need to price your video at $50.)

Do keep in mind that you need 10 clips to open a store, but once you have uploaded clips there's no maintenance. It's a good idea to continue uploading new clips so people can find you more easily, but if you want to stop after the first 10 you'll still get sales.

Homegrown works the same way porn does. Of course you sell the rights, and $350 is not a horrible offer. How many times can you submit?

But if you want to keep making money off your videos, clips4sale and manyvids is where you should be.

I'm just curious but, why Clips4sale and Manyvids (or any other site for that matter) over XTube (where you may also sell clips?) On Alexa page rankings, Xtube has over 10x more unique visitors daily than Clips4sale based on the information we saw. Although they don't offer 60% (it's something closer to 40-50%), the extra traffic would make up for the reduced rate, and then some we hope. Thoughts?

I thought xtube was a place for free stuff, whereas C4S and Manyvids are places to buy content. If that's the case, even if xtube allows you to sell clips, I'd say majority of traffic there intends to see free videos, not pay for them.

Xtube offers an 'amateur' section for clips, pictures and even live webcam. There are some differences between it and other sites. As Alice_and_Abel mentioned, the payout. Xtube pays out 50% but they subtract a 15% credit card processing fee off the top. So in reality you are getting 42.5% of the payout. (see picture below). Another difference I noted is the clips are for a 24 hour rental period, not for sale outright. At least on the one video I looked at, I didn't go further on that.

I went and found Alice_and_Abel's video store and noticed they had a $10 video for rental. They would get $4.25 for that. The annoying thing is I just happened across their page by 'randomly' looking (there's a setting for random). When I tried the search feature I couldn't find it again by entering in 'alice_and_abel' nor just alice or abel. That did take me to their webcam site as they were online. I could see there a few photosets for sale there but when i clicked on videos from there it led me to a blank page. I couldn't actually search for their videos in anyway I could find in ten minutes of trying.

From a purchaser's point of view I don't like the 24 hour rental scheme. I would never do that. And obviously the layout for their sales is atrocious and clunky as hell. Clips4Sale or Manyvids by comparison are streamlined for sales.

I think that's why models would choose those sites over xtube. Xtube could have a billion times more traffic daily, but I'd bet my last pair of shorts they don't have as much sales revenue for the models there.

JerryBoBerry, we checked out manyvid and really liked the layout. We signed up and we're going to post some of our content there as well, and just see where it does better at. You can buy the clip for good at XTube, I think the video hadn't completed their verification yet at the time when you searched for it. Anyways, thanks for the advice. Will report back with some results hopefully.

I might be wrong, but the homegrown dvds I've seen just use shortish clips of a few different people/couples per dvd. So, they probably aren't planning to use everything you give them. Is it possible they based the amount you're offered on the percentage they were choosing to use after reviewing it? My husband submits music for television use sometimes. They always pay him based on the length of the portion they use. So, he hands them a 3 minute song and, if they use 10 seconds of it, he gets $40-$50.

That's a good point, we didn't think about it that way; although they didn't say either way.

Well in the case you want to get 65% please stop on by and check us out, I hope you'll like the layout/design as I did it myself. I think you're both beautiful people and it would be pretty easy to market you guys, which is what I feel we do differently than other sites: actively advertise for our models!

Please stop by and let me know if you have any questions (you don't have to accept bitcoin, we convert it for you)

Site is in my signature, sorry about your rough experiences with homegrown!

Sure we'll make an account now and check it out. So is that 65% after processing fees?

350$ for a porn scene is good money IF you you can reasonably assume you'll get regular work. From everything you've said this homegrown thing sounds like a bad idea if you are doing all the work filming the clips in your own space.

I think ManyVids and Chaturbate would be a good idea for you two. Clips4Sale is good too, but it seems like vanilla stuff doesnt sell as well on there. Other clips sites are Extra Lunch Money and Clipvia. Give streamate a try as well if you're into live camming. Get a twitter account and promote yourself lots!

Keep in mind that the more established a site is, the more traffic and sales you'll get. A high percentage is nice, but if the traffic isnt there its still a high percentage of not-much

Tubesites seem like a weird way to try and sell clips, for the reasons Amber said

You get the full 65% of the prices you set, no processor fees taken out, also for every 5k in lifetime sales you make we'll raise your commission by 5% all the way up to 90%. Only other factor is withdrawal fees, which are a whopping 25cents flat fee. :) so glad you signed up!

Unsolicited advice here, but from firsthand experience I can vouch that boy/girl clips sell well on Clips4sale, will continually sell, and will build up more revenue in the long run. Some of my crappy blowjob clips from 2 years ago still sell well regularly, and at this point even an extra $20 a month from those super old videos is cool.
