A dog called Rupee was dying from dehydration and starvation when Joanne Lefson found him in a dump site in Northern India. But only months later, the handsome mutt has made history.

He's the first dog officially recorded at Everest Base Camp, according to iOL News. And he made the climb in honor of Lefson's late dog, Oscar, who was killed in a car accident in January.

Hundreds Of Children Rescued In Canada Child Porn Bust

Canadian police announced this week that a massive child pornography investigation has led to the arrests of more than 300 people across the globe. The three-year investigation, nicknamed Project Spade, has also reportedly led to the rescue of almost 400 children.

Announcing the end of Project Spade during a press conference Thursday, Toronto Police Service Chief William Blair explained that the investigation began in 2010 after undercover officers made contact with a Toronto man suspected of sharing child pornography, per the Agence France-Presse.

The man, identified as Brian Way by the BBC, was later taken into custody for allegedly owning a company that distributed child porn on the Internet.

The Associated Press writes:

Police allege the man instructed people around the world to create the videos of children ranging from five to 12 years of age, and then distributed the videos to international customers.
The company, Toronto-based Azov Films, sold mail-order DVDs and streamed online videos of naked boys from Germany, Romania and Ukraine, which it marketed as naturist movies and claimed were legal in Canada and the United States.

The website Azovfilms.com allegedly raked in almost $4 million annually, according to the AFP.

On Thursday, Canadian police said that the investigation into Azov Films led to the arrest of more than 340 people, as well as the rescue of 386 children across the globe. School teachers, doctors and priests were reportedly among those arrested.

Toronto police said this is "one of the largest child porn busts they've ever seen," per the AP.

Thousands of Volunteers to Welcome Batkid to San Francisco

Five-year-old Miles already has experience fighting villains - he's been facing off with acute lymphoblastic leukemia since he was 20 months old.

With his cancer in remission and his last bout of chemotherapy finished in June, his biggest wish was to continue living his life heroically. "He wanted to be Batman," said Patricia Wilson, the Make-A-Wish Foundation's Bay Area executive director.

We can do that, Wilson thought, and she began putting the call out to volunteers to help turn San Francisco into Gotham City for a day for the boy from Tulelake (Siskiyou County).

It might as well have been a worldwide Bat-Signal. Word of the foundation's efforts spread quickly on social media, and soon what started as a small effort to make a 5-year-old boy a hero for the day turned into a citywide extravaganza, with support and volunteers coming in from all over.

On Friday, by Make-A-Wish's count, thousands of volunteers will cheer on "Batkid" as he defeats the Riddler and the Penguin at locations around San Francisco. The mayor will present Miles with a key to the city. Police Chief Greg Suhr will step in as Commissioner Gordon to alert Miles when his heroics are needed.

"I thought I could do it on a scale that a 5-year-old would appreciate," said Wilson, whose foundation specializes in granting wishes to children with serious diseases. "But apparently, it's on a scale now that the nation appreciates."

Just heard they found cookie jars full of drugs in Beiber's home. How ironic  Maybe the dumbass delinquent will finally get permanently deported back to Canada so we can stop hearing about the stupid shit he does on a daily basis.
I'm no fan of his, but you really haven't thought this through. So beibs gets deported to Canada. This will be a big blow to California's economy. 100's or 1000's of dozen eggs will rot on the grocery store shelves. All those mink bath mats unbought. Untold numbers of cookie jars sent back to the manufacturers. How many haute cuisine Scandinavian-Japanese fusion restaurants with $300 per plate dinners will have to close for lack of 2AM business?

And that's just half the story. His posse will be denied entry to Canada due to egg-throwing convictions, and they will be added to the welfare rolls.

What were you thinking? :?

He was secretly hoping with Beiber's deportation they would start filming the reboot episodes of The Great White North starring Justin Bieber and Ryan Reynolds.

But, but, but... that's not very Canadian-ish.

Maybe we could put him along with the Kardashians and all the other childish millionaires on a special island somewhere.

OK, D-List celebrities in a remote location. Hmm, didn't you just describe "Celebrity Survivor" or "I'm a Celebrity...Get Me Out of Here!", or is it just a big coincidence? :?

Justin Bieber turned himself in to Toronto police on Wednesday for an expected assault charge against a limo driver, one week after he was busted on charges of driving under the influence and resisting arrest following an alleged drag race in Miami.

Meanwhile, a White House petition calling for U.S. authorities to deport the Canada native passed 100,000 signatures – the necessary threshold to ensure a response from the government.

The alleged limo driver assault happened on Dec. 29, when Bieber attended a Toronto Maple Leafs hockey game at the Air Canada Centre. The details of the alleged assault – including whether Bieber or a member of his entourage were involved -- were not immediately clear.

The CBC, citing unidentified police sources, reported that Bieber was expected to be charged with assault.

Some positive advancements to help combat superbugs.

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/health/artic ... -MRSA.html

Could a copper door handle help to beat MRSA?

They have proved resistant to even the most powerful antibiotics. But hospital superbugs may finally have met their match - in copper door handles.

Copper, used in medicines for 4,000 years, has been shown to be highly effective in killing off viruses such as MRSA.

• Hospital in soldiers furore uses copper to beat MRSA bug

Even the H5N1 bird flu virus could be vulnerable to it.

So successful have laboratory results been, that all the stainless steel fittings in one hospital ward are to be replaced with copper ones to see if they cut infection rates.

Doorknobs, bath taps, toilet handles and 'grab rails' will be ripped out and replaced with copper versions at Birmingham's Selly Oak hospital.

The trial follows work by scientists at Southampton University which expanded on existing knowledge of the anti-bacterial qualities of copper.

They found that the metal 'suffocates' germs, stopping them from breeding, and also destroying their DNA.
Even tiny pieces of copper killed vast amount of bugs.

A piece just one centimetre square wiped out 10million MRSA bacteria in just 90 minutes. With concentrations of germs on door handles and other surfaces generally much lower, it is thought it will take just 30 minutes to kill the bugs on hospital surfaces.

By contrast, bacteria can survive for days on stainless steel.

Professor Bill Keevil said the findings demonstrated the important role that copper could play in combating superbugs which infect 300,000 patients each year and kill at least 5,000.

'Our work has shown that copper and some of its alloys are able to kill bacterial, fungal and viral pathogens within minutes or hours of when they come into contact,' he added.

'Frequently touched items such as door handles, light switches, trolleys, bed heads, over-bed tables, bedside cabinets and grab rails can all be readily made from copper.

'It is even possible to use textiles containing copper fibres for cubicle curtains, bedding patient gowns and healthcare workers' uniforms.'

As well as MRSA, the researchers found that copper is effective against Clostridium difficile, which was linked to the deaths of 3,800 patients in 2005.

Over 18 months, they will compare the number of infections in the 'copper' ward at Selly Oak with those in a nearby one with stainless steel fittings.

They will also take regular samples from door handles and other surfaces to determine just how well the metal is killing bugs.

If copper works as well in the hospital as in the lab, hospitals across the country could switch to copper fittings.
Dr Mark Enright, an MRSA expert from Imperial College London, welcomed the trial.

He said: 'Copper is very toxic to bacteria - you only need microscopic amounts to have an effect. It should work against all types of bacteria.'

Although probably best known for its use as an electrical conductor or in pipes, the healing power of copper has been known for thousands of years.

The Pharaohs used copper to sterilise wounds and drinking water, while the Aztecs used it to treat skin conditions.
In Ancient Greece, Hippocrates, the 'father of medicine' noted that the metal could be used to treat leg ulcers.

Today, it is a common constituent in antiseptic and antifungal creams.

Prof Keevil said that despite the popular perception of copper costing more than steel, its use in hospitals was likely to be cost-effective.

A Department of Health spokesman said the Government would look at the results of the Selly Oak trial 'with great interest'.

Police: West side Detroit homeowner shoots, kills man trying to break in

George Hunter
http://www.detroitnews.com/article/2014 ... z2ul5NkIBx

Detroit— A woman on Friday shot and killed a man trying to break into her west side home, making it the third time this week that a Detroit homeowner with a legal firearm has killed an intruder.

The shooting involved a woman in her 50s, who was in her house in the 22000 block of Grove Street at about 3:30 p.m. when she heard noises coming from her rear window, Detroit Police 3rd Deputy Chief Rodney Johnson said.

“She went to investigate and noticed a man trying to come in through the window,” Johnson said. “She told him, ‘stop,’ but he continued trying to break in.”

The woman ran to the next room to retrieve her handgun, Johnson said.

“She fired a shot and hit the man in the chest,” Johnson said. “He ran off and collapsed in the street. He was found by responding officers and conveyed to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.”

The homeowner will be questioned but isn’t expected to face charges, Johnson said.

The incident also marked the third time in less than two weeks that a gun-wielding female opened fire on home invaders in Detroit.

On Saturday, two homeowners killed intruders. At 2 a.m., two men broke into a house on Toledo Street on the city’s southwest side and scuffled with the homeowner, who grabbed his gun and shot both men. A 21-year-old man died, while the other man escaped.

Saturday’s other incident happened at about 12:30 a.m. on Abrington, on the city’s west side, when a woman pulled her car into the garage, and was surprised by a gunman. The woman threw her keys to distract the man, reached for her own gun, and fatally shot him.

In an incident that made national headlines, a woman on Feb. 17 opened fire on three teens who kicked in her door in the 7400 block of Woodrow Wilson. The alleged intruders, ages 14, 14 and 15, were caught by police, and face home invasion charges.

“This seems to be sending a message to criminals: It’s not safe to break into someone’s house,” Johnson said. “These criminals need to find another vocation, because crime in Detroit no longer pays.”

Police Chief James Craig has repeatedly expressed his belief that legally armed citizens can deter crime because if more people were armed, criminals will think twice about breaking into their homes or attacking them.

Nice comment on some modern art.
When i was in German class 20 years ago the teacher made us watch a video about some artist who had sold some modern art for over $100,000. All it consisted of was a dozen or so sticks (branches - about a couple inches in diameter, around 4 feet long) leaned against the center of each of the four walls of the room. Then in the middle of the room was a sled i think, might have had some wood piled on the sled. The old time wooden one with wooden sidewalls and metal skids.

A town in Germany bought it so they could display it in the city hall/town meeting hall or something. I couldn't find (read that as remember) who the artist was but Joseph Beuys did similarly themed art. Could have been him.

After the video played I took a handful of pencils and dropped them onto my desk and exclaimed 'It's ART!' The teacher was not amused at my mockery.

I remember looking him straight in the face and telling him I didn't care. The only thing from that video I took away was there were incredibly stupid people in leadership roles who just wasted $100,000 of peoples money so they could buy sticks and a $15 sled from goodwill. They should be put in jail for the sheer stupidity of that decision.

Family Dog Keeps Missing 3 Year-old Boy Safe, Warm & Dry...

Cooperstown, ND (WDAY TV) - A missing 3 year-old boy was located in Griggs County overnight, and authorities say his dog helped keep him warm during his disappearance.

Authorities received a call from North Dakota State Radio, who received a 911 call saying a 3 year-old boy and the family dog, Cooper, were missing and unable to be located. The Cooperstown Fire Department, Cooperstown Ambulance and Binford Fire Department were dispatched to the scene, about 7 miles northwest of Cooperstown, to assist with the search.

Authorities arrived on the scene and started to search on foot where the family left off. ATVs, riders on horseback and volunteers joined the search shortly after. The North Dakota Highway Patrol was called in to assist with the search as it continued. They brought in a Bloodhound Search Dog, as well as an airplane to aid in the effort.

Threat of rain became a major concern around 2 AM, and the decision was made by team leaders to start sending some searchers home. Family and ATV riders continued to search, and within minutes an ATV party returned saying they had found the boy.

A Cooperstown Fireman was riding an ATV approximately a mile southeast of the farm with his search group and spotted something on a knoll. When he pointed his headlight at the area, the dog, Cooper, stood up. The fireman could see the boy laying face down on the ground; he said the dog was laying on top of the child, shielding him from the cold and rain. The child was sleeping at the time he was found.

The boy was taken back to the family farm and then to Cooperstown Medical Center to be checked out.

10-Year-Old Saves Father’s Life With Facebook Post

A 10-year-old girl in West Virginia may have saved her dad’s life with a Facebook post after a tree fell on him during a storm last Tuesday.

Brianna Vance’s father, Gregory, was sitting on the porch in front of their house with two friends when a large tree uprooted by a storm fell down on top of them, ABC News reports. The storm took down mobile phone signals and the house doesn’t have a landline, but the younger Vance was still able to get online and record a Facebook message calling for help.

“The lightning crashed and hit a tree by our porch and my dad’s almost dead,” she said in a tearful video upload. “He needs an ambulance please. Please call one for us if you have a signal. We live in a yellow house.”

After someone saw her plea and called 911, a rescue crew showed up to free the men, who were sent to a hospital after an hour-long rescue. Once there, they were treated and eventually released.

“This is the real hero, that little girl,” said Lt. Tim Granger of the Henlawson Fire Department. “I hope she gets recognized for her heroism.”

Chicago's south side 2014 Little League baseball team are 2014 national champions! They even had a city parade today! Those 11-13 year old tykes were a class act from start to finish and big leaguers could learn a thing or two from them along with the rest of society, imho.
