I recently read “I’ll Be Gone in the Dark” by Michelle McNamara, which is a new release true crime book about the Golden State Killer. It was a great read, highly recommended to anyone who likes to read about this stuff. Super excited to see someone’s been arrested, hopefully this brings some peace to the families and the victims.

I wonder what the odds were of a book about him getting released right before getting caught?

Not surprising when you consider how old the case was. The author died while writing it and her husband is a celebrity so the book got a lot of hype. Public attention to the case = more policie interest in pursuing it.

I woke up to the news yesterday and was in shock! Mostly because I've been listening to a super in depth podcast for the past few weeks about him and all of the crimes he committed, so it felt pretty surreal. I hope it'll bring some closure to the victims and their families as well... and open up a possibility of many, many other unsolved cases to be solved, including Zodiac, whether he's dead or alive.

I was totally fascinated by this cold case. I found out about it on Youtube a few years ago when I was looking for unsolved cold cases.

If anyone really wants to get in to the grit of the case I suggest this writer and her book:

http://www.coldcase-earons.com/

It pretty much tracks his movements in California and presents the facts.

I was checking the reddit sight and other message boards daily for years hoping and hoping that some break would happen instead of the tired posts speculating about if he was dead, or what he was doing etc., and to my surprise I noticed some wacky new topics last week!

To actually put a face and name to the criminal was a GREAT day. DNA and DNA technology! Amazing stuff! So many people affected by this guy and so many strong victims and caring people coming forward to try and find him. A real 'feel good' effort by humanity to get this guy. It is kind of amazing how it all came together. Even if speculating didn't lead to his arrest there was so much work being done by regular people with computers, and the victims or the families of the victims, keeping this case alive thru media, that it really was fuel for those investigators trying to solve it so that the victims of his rapes and murders weren't ever going to be forgotten.

Apparently they caught the guy by submitting his DNA to one of the ancestry sites.

Dots are left to be connected in what I've read. The DNA registry, the picking up his DNA off the street to connect him - each story leaves out a little crucial something.

If it's good gum-shoeing, great. If they had him as a suspect and it took this time to get a warrant to pick up his DNA off the street ; not so good. I need more clarity on the time line for the mechanics.

Serial rapist off the streets? That I'm for, and twice on Tuesdays.

From what I understand they uploaded the GSK DNA to GEDmatch and got a hit on a fourth cousin and narrowed it down through process of elimination from there. He was never a person of interest previously. Once they had it narrowed down they put him under surveillance and collected his DNA from something he publicly disposed of, and then matched it to the GSK DNA.

I'm shocked he was found. His crimes and behavior were so disturbing I thought for sure he was either dead or otherwise incarcerated. It didn't seem possible that he would be able to just blend into the fabric of society and live a normal life but it looks like he did exactly that. I feel as though his kids had something to do with it. He had a nearly five year gap after his first born before his final murder right before his second child was born. It's possible he decided to stop for his daughter and when he found out they were having a second he decided to got out for one last hurrah before being consumed by his familial duties.
From what I understand he's not talking, two of his daughters have spoken to the police and his estranged wife is not cooperating. His ex-fiancee has agreed to come in and speak to authorities. Hopefully SOMEONE can shed some light on this. I feel awful for his ex-fiancee Bonnie who has had her face plastered all over news as the catalyst for his crimes.

Possibly one of the most wtf things I've read about it so far, from one of the original investigators...

Is there any one story about this case that really shook you to your core?

There is one, but I can't share the victims' names with you. It was the couple that was at a public meeting. The husband stood up and said that he didn't believe that a rape could actually happen if there were a husband in the home. Several months later, they were victims. We know the rapist was in that town hall meeting and that he had probably followed them home.
