bar none my favorite stand up ever is george carlin. why? well its george carlin lol.
richard pryor, robin williams and billy connoly come in right behind him

modern comics i love daniel tosh, sarah silverman. stephan lynch (special fred ftw!) and yeah, i know hes a douche, but i like dane cook too lol

Billy Connolly, is one of my all time favorites, but couldn't find the ones i wanted, but these aren't bad.

Really so many I could post here for pages, and pages. I tend to like comics from Oz very well. Jeff Jeffries is a bit over the top, and misogynistic, though I think it is rather tongue and cheek. I like comedy that pushes the line of good taste if it is done well, b/c I think it speaks with a stronger voice, and is more likely to leave a lasting impression.

In 2011 I made a 380 mile bicycle trip to see, Tim Minchin

Dave Chapel, Is so good, I hope his hiatus is not for ever.

I'm not sure who my favorite is but we just discovered Simon Amstell and I really like him a LOT so far! Seriously WATCH THIS!

I'm also going to agree wholeheartedly with Billy Connolly as a favorite!

Richard Pryor

Eddie Murphy

Dave Chappelle

George Carlin

and Bill Hicks

[Edit] Oops I forgot, and Sam Kinison too

Poker Babe just listed a bunch I love but Carlin will always be my favorite. I do love Bill Hicks (RIP) and Chappelle a lot too.
:thumbleft:

Another one I love is also a friend of ours, Sunda Croonquist. Maggy and I adore Sunda. She is as sweet as she is funny!
:-D

I saw George Carlin on stage four times over the years and was in awe of how he stayed relevant and hilarious. Have every recording he ever made and still haul them out for a listen from time to time, including his early stuff from his short-hair, nightclub days. (By the way, his opening act for nearly 10 years, Kenny Rankin, died about one year after Carlin died. If you haven't listened to Kenny Rankin's music, I encourage you to give it a try.)

Agree with many of the above--especially Dave Chappelle, Richard Pryor, and George Carlin.

But for me (also as above) Bill Hicks will always be my favorite--the guy was just on some total other level doing something completely unique--and his comedy was filled with an interesting ingredient: the truth.

Brilliant.

And, yes Carlin is, well Carlin, and his night club stuff is very funny, and interesting, as you can see him becoming what he would be when he would break out of the very conservative surroundings he started working in. Bill Hicks is, Well, Bill Hicks, and just as unique as any comedian ever there was. IMhO.

There is a very good documentary on Lenny Bruce, that is available on Netflix. There are interviews with many of today's most cutting edge comics who give Lenny Bruce credit for opening up comedy to what it has become today. It's very interesting.

There is also a showtime special that has 12 - 13 episodes called "The Green Room with Paul Provenza", that is wonderfully interesting. It is a non rehearsed rap session featuring 5 or 6 current comics, (well it is 3 or 4 years old now), talking about comedy. If comedy interest you in a "behind the scenes sort of way" it is for sure good viewing.

I LOVE stand up comedy- For Christmas when I was 18 my parents got me tickets to see George Carlin front row center during his complaints and grievances tour. One of my favorite bits from that was his trying to figure out how the first enema took place along with the breaking down of the 10 commandments.

Jim Gaffigan on the completely other side of the spectrum is hilarious, there was no lull in his routine it was constant laughter. He then signed a poster I bought "Tim- my best friend. Jim Gaffigan" I will forever cherish it

Dave Chappelle has been one of my absolute favorites since I first saw him perform. How much do I love him? When he went back to stand up comedy after he was done with his show he performed down in Chicago, there and back would be over 6 hours worth of driving. There's bands I wouldn't even had made that trek for, but I couldn't miss seeing him. I got to be one of those white guys in a black dominated audience!

I need to see Daniel Tosh and Louis CK live. Another Comedian is John Pinette, his "I'm Starving" special is a must see and his "You been here 4 hour!" bit is something I was yelling even when I was a kid.

I'm basing my posts off people that I have seen perform in person. Though Bill Hicks and Sam Kinison and Richard Pryor are three people I wish I could have seen and absolutely love their stuff.

George Carlin, Bill Hicks, oh god yes. I can't ever get enough.

Agreed with you camstory, that it's so fascinating watching George Carlin throughout his career evolve into George Fucking Carlin. I love that his dirty words segment is one of the least controversial sketches of his. At one point he was just a lad going against the grain by saying fuck a lot, and on those specials there is a pre-warning about the contents of the show, and he turned into a fucking prophet as far as I'm concerned. The voice of reason in a crazy world. AND PEOPLE LISTENED TO HIM.

I could gush about Carlin all day. I'm pretty much in love with that man.

Also, yay Tim Minchin! I remember you introducing me to him awhile back! :D

Bill Hicks, also a genius. He seamlessly stitches together philosophy and comedy in such a brilliant manner. That man WAS a trip.

Really, pretty much all my favorite sketches have been posted here already. I'll try to dig up some that weren't.

@SweepTheLeg your story about getting the poster signed by Jim Gaffigan helped to remind me, I am stalling again. In February of 2010 I did 3 minutes at an open mic. (well less than 3, but it felt like an hour.) I did well enough, I was invited to come back and do 5-10 min on one of the off nights, (Wen, Thur.) later that month. I put it off a couple of times, and then when I was ready to slam it one Thursday, they didn't have a spot. Then life happened, and the owner Tommy, ( super cool dude), said he would just leave it open-ended, if they had a spot, I could do it when I was ready. Well I have been thinking I'm close to ready, so about 2 months ago I sent a message to a comic who is an inspirational person, (kind, caring, generous man.) Louie Anderson. I had just watched a recent bit of his in which he talks about getting old, comedy still improving, but eyes going the other way. The field in which you can send a message to Louie from his web page put everything in caps. This is how the exchange went.

Hi Louie, My name is Eric and I have just turned 50. I live in the S.F. Bay Area and was invited to do 5 minuets of stand up at Tommy T's in PLEASANTON CA. about 3 years ago. I am going to do it, bomb or kill, I can't stand not to. I just wanted to tell you, that you have been an INSPIRATION to me. Oh, and if you were not aware, your "contact louie" SOFTWARE here insist that i yell at you? I understand, the hearing goes right after the eyes, - looking forward to that. :)

(Reply)
Congrats Eric!! I'm proud of you! Let me know how it goes!

Peace, Love &

Happiness

Louie
Yea, sorta warm and fuzzy.

@MissChaos, I too fell most of my favorites have been mentioned, but not all. I would add Robin Williams, Chris Rock, Patton Oswalt, Margaret Cho, and I also think, Louis Black, and Ron White are very funny, and there are others. OK I guess I have a lot of favorites, which sorta fucks up the whole idea of favorites hu.

And I am so very thrilled you took the time to check out Tim Minchin. You can't ever really expect someone to check out your un-solicited gift comic. a lot of times you might not be in the mood right then, and you forget to go back to it. Or with Minchin, if it is his early stuff when he used to wear a lot of eye make up, some ppl are put off by that and they never get past it. But hearing you dig him is so cool. I'll leave you with this, - it took me like 6 months to be able to follow this song word for word from start to finish. I never had so much trouble with anything Emiem. (try it and let me know if it is just me or what.)

There are lots of good ones. I've been watching Dylan Moran's videos quite a bit recently.

Tosh is pretty funny in a "did he just say that?" kind of way?

I found Carlin to be amazing, especially because he evolved as he did from a mainstream nightclub comic to quite the cerebral dude.

My wife and I get a real kick out of ventriloquist Jeff Dunham.

And the Amazing Jonathan never fails to crack me up.

Some great shouts in here, notably for me Tim Minchin (who I've seen 3 times on 3 different shows, each one brilliant. Nice guy too, as had a good chat with him after a gig when he was starting out in the UK), Jim Jefferies who I've wanted to go and see live but have never been able to get the chance, and Simon Amstell who I've also seen live.

Jim Jefferies story about taking a disabled friend to a prostitute in Australia is one of the funniest things I've seen for ages.

Dara O'Briain is on my list of people to see, but I missed out on him last year when he came to my town, and I fell out with a friend who brought us tickets to go and see him in Cardiff last year which was annoying.

Another who I have seen live is Paul Sinha, who is probably better known in the UK as being on the gameshow "The Chase". Very funny guy!
