A common question I hear asked is "what do you like - blondes? Brunettes? Redheads?" There's a fourth hair colour that I hardly ever see mentioned and that's black haired women. They commonly get grouped in with brunettes, but black hair is... black, not brown - black. I've heard them being called different names, like raven-haired and goth. Raven-haired is a misnomer because the actual raven bird has some purple in its colouring. Goth also doesn't work since a woman can have naturally black hair or even dyed black hair and not have that gothic look. So my point I'm trying to make is, what's the best name for black haired women?

Oh, and since :text-worthless:, here are some of my favourite black-haired beauties:

There are others, but I didn't want to hog all of Amber's bandwidth posting images and vids.

The reason for "black heads" being called brunette is because genetically they ARE brunettes. Even if they are of ethnic origin, their genetics are for brunette. It depends on if the "tone" genes dictate excessive "markings, IE black "masking" the brown.... ;)

I thought they fell under the brunette category too. Besides, black heads are a form of acne. :p

Yeah, I was about to say the same thing. Not a really good mental image with that term.

Most black hair is just really, really dark brown hair that you can sometimes tell in certain lighting. Except for some Asian people who have blue/purple tints to their black hair which is pretty kick ass, actually. But yeah, Eva pretty much summed up the whole thing genetics thing.

I think black would just have to fall under the grey/silver/white hair category of being called "black haired". Also, I totally think any of those three hair colours can be completely sexy, too. Especially white/silver on really dark skin regardless of the age, or even white hair on pale skin in cases of partial or full albinism. :twocents-02cents:

I was just pondering this very thing the other day... hmm... Ravenheads maybe?

From Wiki: "Black hair is the darkest and most common of all human hair colors globally"

You'd think there'd be a word describing people with black hair, since it's so predominant!

I'm confused, because that wikipedia article seems to be saying the opposite of what you're saying. In particular, it explains that there is both a black and a brown type of Eumelanin (one of the two kinds of melanin found in human hair) and later says that "the genetics of hair colors are not yet firmly established." And then there are two separate main articles for brown and black hair that makes them seem fairly distinct, and occurring in different populations.

Eumelanin is a type of melanin which alters which genetic is expressed (seen). It is basically to alter the appearance of the brown tones, it also alters how a blond can have bright white, gold, yellow, copper or orangy tones, yet still be genetically blond. :) Hope that helps! I studied genetics for color and hair within dog genetics, and humans are MUCH easier! LOL

I'm with FrecklesXxX.. I've always called 'them' Ravens or Raven haired.

Raven haired or possibly just "ravens" although that sounds odd. To me, I don't care about genetic details of the why or wherefore or whatever regarding hair color. Raven haired just sounds fabulous.

I just consider them dark brunettes. There are so many different shades of blonde and redhead, why should brunettes be any different?

Because it's a different hair colour entirely. Black hair is not dark brown - it's black.
