Feel free to comment with your reasons.

For reference: Kool Ray is a person who has recently begun posting incredibly condescending tutorials on youtube, with bad special fx trying to tell girls how to be better camgirls. Check out this thread to read all about it. All comments not related to whether or not kool ray is a troll should be posted in that thread also.

viewtopic.php?f=15&t=10810

I don't think he's a troll. I just think he has literally no idea how to talk to women - hence the condescension, the awkward shoutouts, the bad jokes etc. I think he's actually trying to help. But I also think he's only trying to help in the hopes that it will garner him the gratitude of a bevy of beautiful cam girls (so far, it's only earnt him their scorn ).
If he was a troll and only sought negative attention, I don't think he would have taken down the old videos and re-uploaded them minus the negative comments. He also likes to "reward" cam girls who lavish him with positive attention (which in actuality is likely only a brief twitter comment but I suspect that's more female attention than he's used to in the real world) with his amazing shoutouts.
I also think he would have descended on this here board by now if he was a troll.

I would pick "socially retarded with a dash of narcissism", but that's not an option so I'll just choose maybe.

I picked "Maybe? I don't know..." and I'm not that sure he is a basic too - viewtopic.php?p=253221#p253221 - if I'm not wrong, those options (tip - buy tokens to spy and etc) don't appear to basics.

Good spot. I vaguely remember the basic layout being a bit different to that too. But why would he lie about being a basic? Unless he just means he never buys tokens?

 great thread

I don't think he's a troll, but I do think he feels like a bit of a rockstar with models tweeting and commenting on his videos (even negatively) and that the negative attention may be inspiring him to seek more by making more videos and perhaps reflecting that negative attention by becoming more "sensationalist" with his content.

To me, to call him a troll depends on a few facts that I'm not convinced of:

a) calling him a troll implies he somehow fooled us all by making his videos go viral in our small community, without self-promoting within ACF, without being known to any of us beforehand, while namechecking models that mostly don't post here, and perhaps most importantly hitting a camgirl nerve about guys "trying to help" that most guys don't know exists.

b) The idea that he "MUST be a troll because no one this stupid exists". Here is my proof that they do:

The special effects from the eighties, are they THAT easy to remember that it's the first thing that'd pop into some noob's mind when deciding to create a video? no, they don't even exist anymore anywhere, come on, the guy puts bees and star treck effects in his videos, he HAD to have known it would appear comical.
sound effects. Cheesy shout outs with the eightie's game show host voice , jokes that are so lame you want to laugh at them, etc.
To me it seems like a guy who, reading these forums and the annoyance we express about the guys who "give advice out of the blue about stuff they know nothing about", decided to push it further and see if we'd buy it.
He sounds like he's having a laugh in his last vid, It's pure "second degree/ intentional stupidity" to me, since it's the kind of sense of humour that seems to be in fashion these days (see omgpop for reference lol) I think he just gets a kick out of thinking we're buying it. He seems pretty articulate to me, just pretending to be dumb.
It's just my opinion but i'm pretty sure I'm right.
Eta: I vote Jupiter is KoolRay. Who's with me?

He may or may not be a basic, but that IS what the screen looks like for basics.

This is what it looks like for basics, (model name edited because I just picked one at random):

I think he's weird and socially awkward, but I don't think he's a troll. I also think he feels entitled to watch shows without ever paying for them since his shout-outs and videos should be enough.

ETA: I *am* a premium, I just created this basic account to see what it looks like because I've never been a basic before.

Ah, well that solves that mystery :)

I call troll, simply because what a troll is has broadened in definition over the last ten years. My definition: a socially awkward person who compensates by using the anonymity of mass media to garner attention.

Prior to the internet, and before the term was even developed, trolls existed--they were those guys who wrote bizarre letters to the editor in local newspapers; they were the guys who called into talk radio shows with negative attitudes.

Simply stated, trolls inhabit a spectrum of behavior models, all of which are negative.

Disagree, you can't troll by accident. Whatever else a troll is, it's completely intentional. There is simply no way that an average mfc guy, much less a basic, would know that a video on looking at the camera would cause camgirls to get pissed. No freaking way.

Oh, I never said it was an accident. I don't think trolls troll by accident. Conversely, I don't think there's a class of humans who say to themselves, "Hey! I think I'll become a troll! That sounds like fun." I believe the behavior is innate in the individual; the behavior results from personality flaws, not from developing strategies, although they may plan individual postings.

Yup, hell after reading this forum I am pretty sure I'm smarter than the average member about cam girl pet peeves, and I am still shocked by the amount of hate the guy has generated. I'm glad that most of you also appreciate the humor value, but clearly he has hit a raw nerve, like combining all of your pet peeves about members, with a weird stalker vibe, and oh a best of all he is a long time basic.

Now if I wanted to become a troll Kool has prepared an awesome set of tutorials, but no guy could have figured out how to punch every button. We just don't understand woman well enough much less cam girls.

I think I am going to outsource my future comments about Kool to Jupiter pretty much ditto what he has been saying.

I think he is just a freeloader doing what freeloaders do. He is telling models what they need to do to get him off in free chat. You see people like him all the time in new model's room. He has just automated the process.

I'm going to compromise. Kool-Ray is a "virtual troll." Someone who may not be a troll by absolute definition but whose behavior elicits the same feelings of anger and disgust that he would if he were a real troll.

Then again, he may be a troll. :)

He was not a troll. Way too stupid. He is a troll now because he is getting the attention he wants. I do not think he even knew what a troll was but now he sees the attention this is getting him and running with it. This happens fairly often with the socially inept. They inadvertently stumble across trolling when people can't stop commenting on how stupid they are being. :woops:

You're right. He didn't know what trolls were, he called them "haters" in one of his vids.

I almost hit the not troll button and was going to post "just an idiot, with no social sense, and blinded by the light of his own brilliance." But Now I must reconsider, there is perhaps one person who could pull this thing off.....and I helped him stuff a skeleton in his closet long ago ;)

In regard to him not knowing what a troll is--did the first internet troll know what a troll is? Lack of knowledge of a specific word does not deny an individual the ability to manifest the behavior that a word stands for. Words are just labels we apply to things, actions and modifiers, they are not the things themselves.

I call him a troll because his behavior appears to match what many trolls do. Trollism is a pretty loose term anyway; it's not like defining oxygen. :)

He would not need to know the term but to be a true troll he would have had to be doing it intentionally. I truly believe there was no intent in the beginning. He was an unintentional troll to start, but now he is definitely trolling.

Basically, a troll is someone who makes other people miserable--or at least uncomfortable. I don't think it matters whether that is their intent or not. Some people act this way just because it's the kind of people they are. I've worked with folks with this sort of personality--some of them, I later found out, weren't even aware of their own mode of behavior.

Certainly, there may be people who actually think to their self: "Hey, I think I'll troll today." But that intent isn't necessary for folks to call someone a troll. Shoot, the definition we're attempting to be so anal about doesn't even exist in the dictionary--it's a slang term.

I think "intent" is the deciding factor between troll and idiot/asshole.

Sometimes I may over-analyze. Intent may be the deciding factor, certainly in Kool-Ray's case. He's not an idiot, since he's able to cobble together videos with 80's era special effects. And going by his answers to various tweets, I'd say his intent is pretty clear.

I keep thinking of the early trolls, the ones found on USENET in the early days of the internet. They weren't just people who "meant to be assholes." They were sick people...neurotic at best. One of the early trolls was tracked down--his real self was more "Walter Mitty-like" than some evil asshole. A lonely man with no friends of meager means. The "living in grandma's basement" type guy.

I don't mean to apologize for trolls--whatever their psychology or reasons, they are all assholes.
